After considering numerous locations in Grand Marais for a new and expanded library facility, the Grand Marais Public Library board decided at their latest meeting to explore with the city council the possible acquisition of the property located at the northwest corner of First Avenue East and First Street East. The property consists of the vacant corner lot and the structure previously occupied by the North American Sailing School.
The Cook County Vikings played a brilliant all-around game to beat the Mahnomen Indians 30-7 in the Class A state quarterfinal game in Duluth. The win advances the Vikings into the state semifinals where they will face the Adrian Dragons at the Metrodome on Nov. 16. Of note, Tait Sande finished with 89 yards rushing to bring his season total to 2,028—a new school record for rushing yards in a season.

The Grand Marais Municipal Pool has changed its hours, started special programs and relied on volunteer hours, but it is still losing money for the city. Compared to the prior October, customer counts are down by 241 people.
An announcement last week that Sen. Paul Wellstone is working with the Minnesota DNR and the Forest Service to facilitate the sale of about 112,000 acres of state lands within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness drew strong criticism from northern legislators and others. The proposed sale is supported by Gov. Arne Carlson, the Minnesota congressional delegation, the Superior National Forest supervisor and the Forest Service’s Region 9 forester.

A color television set disappeared from the lobby at the Lutsen Resort last Friday evening. It was the evening before hunting season and there were a considerable number of people about. A night watchman was also on duty.
Two hunters from Willmar who had hunted in the Pike Lake area Monday were rescued from their partly submerged truck cab after it left the road and turned upside down in Cascade River near the upper Cascade bridge. The two were in the cab and chilly water for about 20 minutes before other hunters who happened to be camping there were able to get the jammed doors open and let them out.
A humorous aspect of the hunt: a young cook for a party at Tofte used liquid detergent for frying the ham and eggs. No great ill effects, but much joking resulted. There were six in the party.

Helen Hedstrom sprained her thumb in physical education last Tuesday morning.
H.O. Toftey has resigned his position as highway maintenance man at Tofte and is now fishing.
Lighthouse keeper Luick left last Wednesday on the America for Menagerie Island to put the light in operation for the rest of the fall. He returned from Isle Royale Sunday on the America.
A man from Creech’s camp was examined today before Judge A.V. Johnson as to his sanity and found to be insane. He will be taken to Fergus Falls by Deputy Sheriff Sam Zimmerman Jr., along with Frank Cherry who will go along as assistant.
Andrew Hedstrom has bought a new portable mill and will saw ties and lumber for Hjelmar Helmerson.
