Isak Hansen of Lutsen has been selected by Northern Community Land Trust to serve as general contractor for Sawtooth Cottages. The project consists of 10 affordable, energy-efficient homes to be built in the residential development adjacent to the Cedar Grove Business Park. Hansen’s was one of five firms that completed the request for qualification on the project. The five ranged from individual contractors to a very large Duluth firm; only two are based in Cook County.

Nine Cook County High School seniors have been invited to participate in the 50th annual University of Minnesota-Duluth Senior High Honor Band Festival this weekend. The festival offers a chance to work with the UMD music faculty as well as to participate in music clinics, attend performances by the Twin Ports Wind Orchestra, and to perform in the UMD Honors Band concert.

NOV. 3, 1997

State-licensed moose hunting parties in northeastern Minnesota killed 152 moose during the October hunting season. This year the DNR issued 197 moose hunting licenses for the Arrowhead. Moose hunting in northwestern Minnesota was closed because the herd there has declined.

Tofte was looking forward to a new post office building this year, but an unprepared contractor may cause the project to be delayed indefinitely. The concrete footings have been poured, but no building permit has been issued. The Tofte Design Review Board met Oct. 27, but tabled review of the new building after it was realized all the needed information was not available. Members noted that such information as drainage problems, sewer plans and other minor things like the color of the building is yet to be determined.

50 YEARS AGO
NOV. 2, 1967

Dewey Albinson, known here for his Grand Portage oil paintings of the ’20s, is still painting despite the fact that he is nearly 70. He said he still devotes his full time to painting. On Nov. 6 he will exhibit his latest work at the Marque Music Manor in Minneapolis. Featured will be a portrait of the late Carl Sandburg, who posed for the artist in Minneapolis 25 years ago.

Bill Donegan of Schroeder saw a flock of magpies here Monday, about 15 by his estimate. This is unusual, as magpies don’t belong here and, in the past, only an isolated specimen has been observed.

Surgery on his injured knee and being hospitalized interrupted Bob Toftey’s participation in the remaining North Dakota University football games and it is not likely that he will be allowed to play the rest of the season. He is co-captain for the Sioux this year.

90 YEARS AGO
NOV. 3, 1927

A country club for Cook County is being organized in Duluth by 31 prominent business men. The project is sufficiently under way so that memberships are already being sold; a number of Grand Marais businessmen having joined. The club has acquired the holdings of the Brule Land and Outing company and the Grand Marais Lakesites company. The buildings and golf grounds will be at the Arrowhead River. Private cabin sites will be furnished the members who so desire them.

The state forest service is building a new lookout tower near West Bearskin Lake.

John A. Johnson brought in his fourth wolf Monday.

Richard Berg has sold his Ford coupe to a Mr. Jentoff, who is fishing for Mrs. Ben Seglem.
