Audrey Summers and Zachery Sturm are going to Washington, D.C. this spring to attend the People to People World Leadership Forum. The sixth-graders are excited about it and are already thinking of what they want to see – and do – when they get there. The students were nominated to attend the prestigious conference by their former fourth-grade teacher Jana Larson, who went to China last year with a People to People Citizen Ambassador program.
Five Ely men and a 16-yearold boy quickly and quietly appeared in a Lake County courtroom Monday— a far different atmosphere than the Aug. 7 rampage they are accused of in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. Between them, the six stand charged with 79 separate counts of terroristic threats, harassment, theft and other charges after drinking and allegedly terrorizing many campers on Basswood Lake late that night.

The lights went out in Grand Marais for almost an hour the morning of the first day of October. In order to repair a faulty jumper wire outside the power substation while minimizing risks to utility workers, Public Works Director Russell Good decided to shut off electricity to the entire city. “A connector wire had worked its way loose, starting an arc,” Good said. “It would have been a real fireworks show down there if we hadn’t shut the power off when we did.”
The Sugarloaf Interpretive Center Association will hold a dedication ceremony of Iona’s Beach at the former Twin Points Resort on Oct. 4. The site was purchased by SICA in 1995 from the Lind family, who has owned it since 1938, when Iona and John Lind, immigrants from Finland, opened the Twin Points Resort. SICA purchased the property and then sold 5.4 acres to the state of Minnesota to be administered by the Department of Natural Resources as a public boat launch.

Greg Page, 19, who attended high school here as a freshman in 1963, and who was injured early this season in football practice at the University of Kentucky at Lexington, died as a result of those injuries last Friday. The injury to a vertebra near his neck had rendered him paralyzed from that point downward. His injury occurred on Aug. 22 on the fourth day of practice in a non-contact drill. His death came 38 days after the injury.
A truck heading for Canadian moose hunting burned near Grand Marais Friday morning. The hunters, whose names were not learned, lost most of their equipment as well as their truck.
Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Olson and son Teddy were among those who attended the Ringling Bros. Circus in Duluth last week.

The state law requires every person in charge of a garage or repair shop to report to the police or sheriff immediately, and to the registrar of motor vehicles within 24 hours, any car which shows evidence of having been in a serious accident or struck by a bullet. Such reports may be of great help to the police and sheriffs in their efforts at law enforcement. The reports must be made even if the garage man knows that the owner is a law-abiding citizen. In such cases the reports will be used only for statistical purposes.
The International Telephone and Telegraph Company has purchased the Arrowhead Telephone Company property. The Arrowhead company was a consolidation of the Tofte and Beaver Bay lines. This gives the Grand Marais company a monopoly on the North Shore business to Two Harbors.
Hilbert Jones motored to Duluth today to attend the Auto Show. He will bring back three new radios.
Mr. and Mrs. Boisvert have shipped their furniture from Hill City and are now at their new home in their rooms over the barber shop.
