In an effort to sustain and grow the economy of Cook County, members from the region’s tourism industry have developed a countywide events and visitors bureau. This new bureau is a joint venture among the Lutsen- Tofte Tourism Association, Gunflint Trail Association, two Grand Marais tourism properties, the majority of West End properties, and Lutsen Mountains. The organization will be known as the North Shore/Gunflint Trail Events Bureau.

The Travel Channel’s “Bizarre Foods” host Andrew Zimmern and a crew were in Grand Marais last week to shoot an episode for the popular program. They went fishing and had a shore lunch with Harley Toftey, and sampled gooseburgers and gizzards at My Sister’s Place.

SEPT. 29, 1997

A forest fire burning within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, close to the Cook and Lake county borders, appears unlikely to become a major concern. Forest Service officials said the fire encompasses only 10-12 acres, having burned for a full week already. It is believed to have been started by a lightning strike.

A black bear was shot illegally and left beheaded in the Cook County Landfill. Its body was found Sept. 19. According to the DNR, the bear was killed a couple of days before it was found. Its head, but none of its organs, had been removed. The remains were spoiled and had to be buried.

50 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 28, 1967

Jesse Lyght of Lutsen was severely injured in a 30-foot fall at the Atikokan mines where he was employed. His mother reports that he received a broken hip, several broken ribs and a head injury. He is getting along as well as can be expected.

With heavy frost forecast, the gardeners are taking in vegetables and flowers, and potatoes are being dug.

Lowell White, formerly of Grand Marais, began working for the state recently. He audits the new sales tax.

Robert J. Riley, former historian with the Grand Portage National Monument, has received three advancements since leaving Grand Marais last year. He is now in Spokane, Washington.

90 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 29, 1927

Oscar Lindskog has purchased a radio for his cabin at mile post 17.

Ella Running has quit school here and is going to finish in Duluth.

The 13th Annual Fair of the Cook County Agricultural Society opened yesterday and is now in session. In spite of the inclement weather there was a good attendance, and with prospects for nice weather today it should be a gala occasion.

Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Bogie of Park Falls, Wis., were touring the North Shore on their honeymoon last week.

P.M. Smith of St. Paul and valuation engineer of the telephone companies of the state, has been in the county the past few days taking an inventory of the property of the International Telephone Company of this village.
