Students, parents and community members are expected to crowd the room at the next ISD 166 school board meeting on Monday to protest the board’s decision to close the campus. The decision, made by the school board earlier this year, closes the campus completely for students in the ninth and 10th grades and prohibits 11th- and 12th-graders from driving their cars during the noon hour.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty called the Legislature back into special session Sept. 11 to fund recovery and rebuilding efforts in the region – primarily to address a $150 million flood relief package. But the session will also include a package of about $1 million in Ham Lake fire recovery money for Cook County.

A one-vehicle accident involving a 29-year-old worker at Tuscarora Lodge occurred Sept. 10 on the Gunflint Trail, about two miles north of Loon Lake. The victim was flown by helicopter to St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth for treatment of severe head injuries.
Due to dwindling operating funds, the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce has voted to reduce the days of operation of the Visitor Information Center to weekdays only until Oct. 17. At a special meeting of the Chamber and Grand Marais City Council on Sept. 9, the two groups failed to come up with a plan to fund the information center.

SEPT. 14, 1967
Kenneth Netland, who was injured while on his bicycle early in September, has been in the local hospital and is now at home. He had several fractures including his collarbone, and had subsequent surgery.
Kenny Nelson, sporting a beard, has returned home from a three-month geology trip in Alaska, headquartered in Fairbanks. Kenny mined for gold in “them thar hills” and has the nuggets to prove it.

SEPT. 15, 1927
According to immigration officials, 1,000 cars crossed the border Sunday going into Canada. That was at the rate of about one car a minute.
The steamer Cook is in the harbor this week.
A calculagraph time recording machine has been installed in the telephone office. This machine is for toll purposes, and records the time a conversation is carried on. It insures every long distance user accurate time on his call.
Jimmy Burns, the world’s champion endurance and stunt automobile driver, who recently drove a car 24 hours blindfolded on Duluth streets, passed through Grand Marais last Thursday night on his way to Port Arthur.
LOST – A fountain pen. Will the finder be kind enough to return it to this office for which the owner will be duly thankful.
Einar Allen had his tonsils removed last week at a Duluth hospital. He returned home Tuesday.
