More than 300 people from as far away as Washington, D.C. gathered in community to celebrate the opening of the Grand Portage Heritage Center on Aug. 10. The National Park Service made good on its promise to construct the building at Grand Portage National Monument 48 years ago. “This building is a reflection of the promise they made long ago….It feels good to be here, “ said tribal chairman Norman Deschampe at the ceremony.

Gunflint District Ranger Dennis Neitzke said Tuesday local Forest Service firefighting resources are “maxed out,” and warned that another wildfire or series of small fires could overwhelm the agency. “We are in pretty serious conditions,” Neitzke told the Cook County commissioners. “We’ve been able to manage all fires so far, but if these conditions continue, it will be beyond our capabilities.”

20 YEARS AGO
AUG. 18, 1997

Thirteen young men ranging in age from 21 to 26 were issued citations for disorderly conduct following a rumble at the Village Inn Resort in Lutsen, reported at 3:03 a.m. Aug. 10. The incident report said that 10 to 25 men were outside a condo trying to shatter the windows, and that one was broken. It also said they had used golf clubs on the door. The man inside had met the men in the bar earlier, but it is unknown what caused the disturbance. All those cited have been ordered to appear in District Court on Sept. 3.

Moviegoers never had more fun than those 50 or so people in 20 canoes who watched “Some Like It Hot” on Seagull Lake on Saturday night, Aug. 2. Yes, thanks to Wilderness Canoe Base, the second annual “Flick and Float” paddle-in movie was projected onto a huge screen for an evening of good old-fashioned black-and-white movie entertainment. Special preparations included sewing seven bed sheets together for the screen, pulling taffy and popping popcorn, creating posters, and placing anchored buoys for boats and canoes.

50 YEARS AGO
AUG. 17, 1967

The body of George Goller of Milwaukee, one of two men who started for Isle Royale in a small boat July 13, was found washed up on a small point Sunday. His companion is still missing despite an intensive search by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Houghton County, Michigan, sheriff ’s department reported that Mr. Goller’s body had floated to the surface and was washed to shore.

A two-car accident occurred on Highway 61 east of the Rock Cut, about four miles west of Grand Marais yesterday afternoon. First reports were that one of the cars caught fire and burned, but the occupants were able to get out.

90 YEARS AGO
AUG. 18, 1927

Sam Zimmerman has ordered a new bus to use in transporting the school children from the West End of the county.

A.M. Fox of the Motor Power installed a new gasoline shovel for the county.

Cambell Shields’ truck tipped over between the 22 and 23 mileposts on the Gunflint road when one of the wheels struck a rock on the side of the road. No one was hurt and the truck was righted in a short time.

J.S. Creech & Son are starting another tie camp at Jones’ place on Good Harbor Hill.

John Erickson and Olaf Larson of Chicago returned home the first of the week after two weeks camping on Poplar Lake. This is their second year here and they expect to come again.
