The North Shore Dragon Boat Festival was a great success this weekend, drawing hundreds of people (27 boats with 22 people in each as crew) to Grand Marais to celebrate the water, sun and camaraderie of paddling their hearts out for a good cause.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for a $2.5 million expansion and renovation project at Arrowhead Electric in Lutsen were held this week.

The North Shore Federal Credit Union celebrated 50 years last week, with five days of ’50s fun. The staff dressed up to look like they just stepped out of “Grease” and hosted a cook-out in their parking lot.

AUG. 4, 1997

School superintendent Don Langan announced that the start of school will not be delayed due to the incomplete school arts facilities project. Students can rest assured that they will be expected in class on Sept. 2.

A 22-year-old Illinois man was revived by CPR after a near-drowning at the Grand Marais Municipal Pool on July 25. He had reportedly been under water for five and a half minutes, and was comatose when pulled from the water. It was said he had no detectable pulse. Six days later, he is still in critical condition at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

50 YEARS AGO
AUG. 3, 1967

Three break-ins were reported to peace officials Thursday morning. At Hedstrom’s lumber yard, entrance was made through a broken window in an overhead door, and through a forced inner door. The safe had been tampered with but nothing was found missing. It is believed the thieves took some saws from Scott’s Shop. At Mrs. Bent’s rock shop a back window was entered when she was not at home. The culprits ransacked the place and some items were missing, she said.

Scott Eckel fell out of a tree yesterday and fractured his collarbone. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Eckel Jr.

Jerry Marks has started a new lodge building at his Tuscarora Lodge on Round Lake.

90 YEARS AGO
AUG. 4, 1927

Three visitors from Chicago were drowned in Alder Lake, 35 miles north of Grand Marais, Tuesday afternoon between 2 and 3 o’clock. Stanley Sapp and wife of Chicago were witnesses. Mr. Sapp tried to rescue them, but the wind tipped over his canoe and he had to hold on to it and swim to shore to save his own life.

The lighthouse tender Amaranth from Detroit has been in the harbor for several days.

John Brown of Duluth, Standard Oil gardener, is making a lawn at the Standard Oil Station here.
