The ISD 166 school board voted to close campus for ninth- and 10th-grade students this fall, meaning that students cannot leave campus during lunch hour. The board also voted to allow 11th- and 12th-graders to leave campus during the lunch hour, but they won’t be able to drive cars or be passengers in cars. School administrators said the new rules have been designed to protect the safety of students.
Fourteen Canadian men were arrested early Saturday morning at Lutsen Resort and Sea Villas after several complaints were made concerning disorderly conduct. According to the Cook County Sheriff ’s Office, callers said there was yelling, screaming and loud music. After being warned multiple times the group was finally ejected from the site around 3 a.m. but then re-gathered on Highway 61 where they allegedly began harassing motorists.

Students will pay 20 cents more per meal in the 1997-98 school year for lunches at the school cafeteria. Prices will now be set at $1.40 for elementary school students, $1.50 for secondary students, and $2.45 for adults.
Cook County High School football stars and 1997 graduates Odin Jorgenson and Erik Renneberg flew to Sydney, Australia July 1 to participate in the international invitational Down Under Bowl. Their team, the Minnesota- Wisconsin All-Stars, won both of their games and came home the champions of the Sydney tournament. The 14-day trip to Australia included visits to huge wildlife parks which housed kangaroos, koalas and Tasmanian devils.

The past several weeks have found considerable activity in the new Cook County Historical Museum, which will formally be opened Aug. 5. The building was built before the turn of the century and housed early lighthouse keepers and their families.
Two Milwaukee men, last seen on July 13 when they embarked from Grand Portage in a 12-foot aluminum canoe, have been the object of search by the U.S. Coast Guard and others since they were missed. Ray Danti of Grand Portage, who reportedly was the last to see them as they took off, said there was about a three-foot swell on Lake Superior at the time. It is presumed they did not reach the Island, but no trace has been found of them.

Hilbert Jones, while cranking a Buick car, got struck on the head with the crank and was unconscious for one and one half hours.
A large car from the state of Wisconsin ran into Charles Nylund’s Chrysler two miles east of town Monday. The Chrysler has a badly bent fender as a result.
Hjalmar Sathers is repainting the Sterling Hotel.
Adolph Backlund was slightly injured while blasting on the North Brule Road last Thursday.
Rene Ellquist is in a Minneapolis hospital with a sore foot.
