A head-on collision on Highway 61 near Tofte left one woman dead and four injured on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The state Highway Patrol reported that, for unknown reasons, one of the vehicles crossed the center line near Good Neighbor Hill and eventually collided with the second vehicle.

The Grand Portage Tribal Council plans to build 16 new rental housing units at Picnic Bay. The Picnic Bay Estates development will include an apartment building with eight one-bedroom units and four two-bedroom duplex buildings. The Grand Portage Band is Cook County’s largest employer with more than 350 people on its payroll.

The Minnesota DNR estimates the statewide bear population numbers at about 23,000, the highest estimate since the agency began counting bears nearly 20 years ago. But with the bear hunting season starting Sept. 1, an abundance of bears isn’t a guarantee of good hunting: in 1996 hunters registered just 1,874 bears, the lowest harvest since 1988. Officials say the reason only 17 percent of hunters were successful last year was because berries, hazelnuts and other natural foods were exceptionally plentiful and thus bears were less tempted by hunters’ baits.

The Grand Marais Arts Festival which took place on July 12 and 13 was a huge success, featuring 47 booths containing everything from photography and watercolor paintings to paper-making and book binding.

JULY 20, 1967

Charles Petek of Ely is the new barber at Merv’s Barber Shop. He is a graduate of the Ely high school and is single.

Rita Anne Deschampe and Janice Sherer appeared on television with National Park Service Ranger Newton Sikes on July 9. The appearance was part of the news broadcast on Channel 3 at 6 and 10 p.m.

Work on frost heave correction, bituminous resurfacing and aggregate shouldering on Highway 61 from Poplar River to Grand Marais has begun. The work will be done by a Hibbing company for an amount of $355,690.44.

JULY 21, 1927

We wish to call attention to the fact there are a large amount of insulators destroyed on the telephone lines. Boys seem to get some fun out of throwing stones, or shooting them off, not thinking that it causes great interference in telephone service, in many cases putting the whole line out of order.

A wandering moose visited J.A. Tofte’s berry patch in his yard last Wednesday evening. He did not destroy any of the plants, being careful to walk between the rows.

Chris Everson has been employed by the Grand Marais light plant for the summer.

C.N. Ashford is very ill at his home.
