More than 50 people turned up at the Park and Recreation Board meeting July 3 to give their input on the future of the park. Their biggest concerns were rules about gardening, outdoor carpeting and storage.
Charter boat captain Darren Peck was presented the highest honor given to a civilian by the U.S. Coast Guard last week – the Meritorious Public Service Award. The recognition was the result of Peck’s rescue of four men when their boat capsized in heavy seas in Lake Superior last September. Peck, who heard the May Day on his radio, went out alone in his 21-foot boat in 5- to 6-foot seas in response to the call.

After a brief discussion, the Grand Marais City Council voted last Wednesday to appoint Leif Lunde as acting chief of police for the city. The action provides coverage of departing Chief Tom Billings’ duties until the city can hire a permanent chief. However, should the city and county decide to join forces, the position of chief could be eliminated.
Discussion by the Economic Development Authority board July 8 of the “Old Ski Hill” property indicated that the EDA is likely to have three years for planning, after which the 400-acre county-owned tract would have to be sold.

Funeral services will be held for Edward Anderson, 23, of Lutsen on July 17. It is suspected he died as a result of foul play near Baker City, California, and investigation continues into his death He had been discharged from service with the Marine Corps as a sergeant last October after a year’s service in Vietnam. He was employed as a typist with the United Engineers at Henderson, Nevada. Authorities say a transient hitchhiker was questioned in the brutal slaying. It is said the victim was shot to death and then his body run over by a car. His car had been stolen.
A 21-year-old Coast Guard member drowned in the Grand Marais harbor Tuesday evening. Details of the accident have not been released while the incident is under investigation.
Americans will bid bon voyage to the Canadian Centennial Voyageur Canoe Pageant in ceremonies July 23 at Grand Portage. The 10 canoes, bound for Montreal and Expo ’67, will head out into Lake Superior the following morning.

JULY 14, 1927
Olaf Olson, who was injured in an auto accident at Schoen’s Corner last week, was taken to Duluth Monday morning and is now in St. Luke’s hospital. Upon an X-ray examination it was discovered that his skull was fractured. He is in a serious condition but it is thought that he will recover.
Benjamin Ambrose, while cutting wood early Tuesday morning, cut his hand very badly. About six stitches were taken.
