CenturyTel Gunflint area customers who had service prior to the Ham Lake fire, with the exception of those rebuilding their homes, are now back in service and have regained the ability to make and receive phone calls. Initially, restoration was anticipated by July 15, but CenturyTel technicians and their crews were able to speed up the process by nearly a month as all cables were placed and enabled as of June 28.

Grand Marais city councilors approved a request by the Chamber of Commerce to hold a snowmobile water skipping demonstration in the harbor on July 4, but withheld a vote on a second request for Fisherman’s Picnic.

JULY 7, 1997

Grand Marais Police Chief Tom Billings said last week he is resigning from the department he has headed since November 1995. Billings said he would work another 30 days.

The Cook County News-Herald jumped into the 21st century with a brand-new web page on the Internet. The web page is a computerized version of the newspaper and includes photographs, news stories, cartoons, letters to the editor and opinion pieces.

Members of the Cook County North Shore Hospital Auxiliary have worked hard at fundraising, and the result is shown in three new benches in the hospital-clinic atrium entrance. The benches were built by Ravenwood, well-known local woodworkers.

JULY 6, 1967

Ernest Shemild had the misfortune last week of breaking a toe when his car ran over his foot. His parked car had begun to move and he returned to it to try to put the brake on. When he opened the door it knocked him to the ground and his foot was thrown into the path of the moving wheels.

The swan that has made its home for some time around Paradise Beach has been hit by a car and killed. Always after a rain the big bird came out on the highway to feed. Many people who kept seeing it were uneasy about the possibility of its being hit. Last week it was finally killed.

Nine persons in one party were rescued from Gunflint Lake Saturday after their boat swamped as they crossed from the Canadian side back to Minnesota.

90 YEARS AGO
JULY 7, 1927

Early Sunday, July 3, Richard Larson, 9, son of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Larson of Two Harbors, fell into Cascade River and was swept over two falls and drowned. His body has not been recovered despite several days of searching.

Two books were abstracted from the Traveling Library. The titles are “Rumpty- Dumpty’s Tower” and “Leaders in Making America.” Can you find them?

Lloyd Shold fell down and broke his finger yesterday.
