In an effort to receive more state and federal funding for housing improvements, the Cook County commissioners voted Tuesday to join forces with Lake County by hiring a housing coordinator.
The 2006 motor vehicle crash statistics were released last week by the Minnesota Department of Traffic Safety, and fatalities have decreased for the third year in a row. Cook County saw two crash fatalities, with 48 personal injury cases. There were 92 property damage crashes, and the overall total crash statistic is down slightly from 2005.
The ISD 166 school board approved a deficit budget for the 2007-08 school year at its regular meeting. At this point, the deficit is $544,000, although that figure is expected to change substantially in the next few months. Funds to cover it will come from the school district’s fund balance, and the board agreed that more than $100,000 in cuts must still be made.

It looks like the city will get the Tom Eckel fish house on Grand Marais harbor and the Cook County Historical Society will convert it into a museum of commercial fishing. Eckel, who attended a work session of the Grand Marais Council last Monday, said he wanted the property to go to the city.
Marie Ludviksen and LaVerne Schliep will be honored as “Pioneers of Pike Lake” at the annual meeting of the Pike Lake Area Association on July 5. The pair will be recognized for their contributions to the area as residents and operators of the two resorts on the lake – Wildwood Resort and Pike Lake Resort.

An early morning riser notices an unusual amount of traffic on the streets and highways around 6 a.m. It is caused by men on their way to work at Taconite Harbor. A breakdown of peak load employment there shows 50 men in the power plant and coal sheds, 17 on maintenance and 23 dock workers.
All buildings of Cook County School District will be closed to any public use after Aug. 7 this summer. This will be to allow sufficient time for final preparation of the buildings for the next school year. Any person or organization planning events requiring use of school facilities is urged to schedule them before Aug. 7.
An accident between a highway mower and a car occurred Tuesday morning near the Rock Cut west of town. The driver of the mower was the only one injured. He was treated for cuts about the face at the North Shore Hospital and released. The mower was demolished.

Tuesday evening Mr. and Mrs. Jesse R. Gapen entertained about a hundred of the people of Grand Marais and vicinity in their large and rustic living room at Gateway Lodge on Hungry Jack Lake. Dancing was the chief amusement. Charles Seglem, John Nelson and Emil Hall furnished the music in the usual satisfactory manner.
Emil Eliasen, who has been living on the West Coast for the past several years, returned to Cook County Sunday. He went to the coast with the Olle i Skrattholt Company and spent a season with them as a violinist in their orchestra. He has not depended upon the musical profession for a livelihood since the first season. Instead he has been working as a longshoreman, and only playing occasionally.
