Allegations of illegal filling of a wetland in Grand Marais near the harbor have been filed with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. The complaint was forwarded to MPCA by Harbor Friends on June 16. The group alleges the city has been filling in wetland areas in the Grand Marais Rec Park adjacent to the old power plant without the required permits. They claim the site has seen considerable activity at least since 1996 when the conservation easement was put in place – most recently in late May.

At the Schroeder Town Board meeting June 12, Fire Chief Phil Bonin reported that some used fire trucks from Minneapolis are for sale for $40,000. “We could never afford a new one like Tofte, but we maybe could go to the $50,000 range,” he said. The board approved adding a check received from Bluefin Bay for $1,000 to the truck fund.

The Sheriff ’s Office is still investigating the case of a surprise assault last Saturday night on a Minneapolis woman (and summer resident of Good Harbor Hill), who was severely beaten and bruised before her screams for help were heard by neighbors. Shorty before midnight the victim was awakened by loud pounding on her door and pleas for help because of some alleged accident. Dressing hurriedly and responding to the clamor, she opened the door to be greeted by a torrent of blows about the head and body. The attacker finally fled in his car, which was parked nearby.

Lester Vaughn of Chicago narrowly escaped drowning last Sunday afternoon while on a canoe trip at East Bearskin. He left his cabin early Sunday morning for a canoe trip alone down the lake. The wind caught his canoe, turning it, and as Vaughn changed the position of his paddle to the other side of the canoe, it capsized. He was at the widest place in the lake, between Flower and Crocodile portages. But being an excellent swimmer, instead of clinging to his canoe as is the usual custom, Vaughn swam a half-mile to shore and arrived at a cabin about two and a half hours later.
