The county board voted to give the go-ahead to construction of a long-awaited skateboard park at the Community Center. Although supporters of the project have already raised the funding needed for the facility, selection of a suitable location has remained in limbo.

Local communications provider CenturyTel has 40 people working to bring phone service back to the Gunflint Trail area where the company’s lines were destroyed by the Ham Lake fire. The company has been working on the restoration of its services since the May 5 fire started.

JUNE 16, 1997

A Grand Marais market for tree-length aspen paying logging contractors about $1,620,000 a year will be lost this summer as the Hedstrom Lumber Company closes the wood chip section of its operation. Howard Hedstrom, president of the company, said the chip wood division of the company has been buying 30,000 cords of pulp wood a year. But due to the loss of a market for the chips, the decision to close was made. The chips are hauled to the Avenor Paper Mill in Thunder Bay.

Three North Shore Care Center directors presented a plan Monday night in Grand Marais to renovate the center to improve the comfort of residents, meet regulations and update building systems. Proposed changes include an increase in the size of the residents’ rooms including larger bathrooms and added living space for visitors, handicap-accessibility, and an improved outdoor area that is more inviting to visitors and residents.

JUNE 15, 1967

Three young men, tipped into the icy waters of Saganaga Lake last Thursday morning, died as a result of exposure to the elements. A fourth member of the group, all of whom were from Grand Meadow, managed to get to shore and survived the ordeal.

Marine Pfc. Harry Sloan became Cook County’s first Viet Nam war casualty when he received extensive injuries in both legs, back and right arm from an exploding VC booby trap while on patrol duty. He was flown to a USMC hospital in Japan, where it is expected he will remain for three or four months. The Purple Heart award he received is being mailed to his parents in Tofte.

On Friday afternoon, June 2, a forest fire near Fort Charlotte was spotted by the Grand Portage Forest Service. Thirty acres of land was burned before the fire was brought under control on Sunday noon.

90 YEARS AGO
JUNE 16, 1927

The case against Alex Boostrom and Bud Lindzy, charged with the illegal taking of beaver, was dismissed Monday. The trial was before Axel Berglund. There was not sufficient evidence to show that the beaver skin found belonged to them.

Ole Overby reported frost in his garden in the town of Colvill yesterday morning.

Salina Toftey will spend today and tomorrow at Hans Toftey’s marcelling hair.

Miss Judith Allen left on the bus today for Duluth, where she will meet six other girls and they will drive to Winnipeg by auto.
