Dick Pottsmith of Aurora won the contest for the 2007 Fisherman’s Picnic button, the second in the line of resurrected Fisherman’s Picnic buttons. The 2007 “I’ll Be Back” button design fetched Pottsmith $100. The new design buttons will be in local outlets by mid-June, sell for $2 and are required for many Picnic events.
In the Section 7A golf tournament at Giants Ridge on May 29, Cook County’s Andy Smith shot an outstanding round of 75. His score was the second best round of the day and good enough for a trip to the state tournament. Smith is only the third golfer from the Cook County-Silver Bay golf program to advance to the state tournament.

A crowd estimated at more than 400 persons, from as far away as Ashland, Wis. and Thunder Bay attended the open house for North House Folk School here May 24. “I thought it was a great turnout,” said Mark Hansen of Grand Marais, director of the school that will teach folk crafts and skills for the first time this summer. Classes are scheduled to start this month.
Should the city of Grand Marais take over the franchise of cable television here and operate as a municipal communications system? That is one of the options being considered by the Grand Marais Cable Board, an advisory group to the city council. In addition to municipal ownership, the city can opt to negotiate with Triax, the Denverbased firm that now owns the franchise, for more channels and improved service.

W.A. Wettergren, executive secretary of the Minnesota School Boards Association, will deliver the commencement address at the Cook County High School graduation ceremonies Friday evening. His topic will be “The Time of Opportunity.” Steven Massie will speak for members of the senior class, which numbers 75 graduates.
Rex Green of Cascade happened upon the remains of a human form last Friday while walking through the woods near a stream where he had been fishing, in the vicinity of Caribou Lake near Mistletoe Creek. There is a possibility the skeleton may be that of a logger who disappeared from Losensky’s camp some years ago.
Because of the fast approaching summer camping schedule, all Scouts of Troop 167 are asked to please get in their $4 for the International Camporee at Kakabeka Falls, Canada on June 23-25.

Several officers of the First National Bank of Duluth fished in Pine Lake from Saturday until Monday and took home a nice string of trout.
The Grand Marais Gun Club will hold its first spring shoot next Sunday. Last year there were developed some remarkable marksmen among the fair sex as well as among the men. If the club didn’t develop them, then it discovered them.
Bear are reported to be very numerous in the woods.
A car went through town Sunday with a banner across the back – “Lindbergh for President.”
L.G. Lundquist is building a new tire shop on Broadway, the old site of the North Shore Garage.
At the special election in the town of Grand Marais last week the town voted to work separately from the county in road work.
