Human remains found April 14 in Grand Portage have been identified as those of a 30-year-old Superior, Wis., man, according to the Cook County sheriff. The remains were discovered by hikers on a mountain overlook of Lake Superior. A deputy who investigated the report found a human skull, several bones, clothing, a wallet and several other items. Identification was found inside the wallet. No criminal activity is suspected, and the investigation is closed.
Clara Waddell is the valedictorian for the Cook County High School class of 2007, and Jessica Nelson is the salutatorian.
The ISD 166 school board voted unanimously to accept a proposal from Energy Services Group to upgrade the ventilation and heating systems at the Grand Marais campus at a cost of $4.5 million. It is expected that the upgrade will be funded through five different sources including grants and bonding, and will bring the system into compliance with state codes.

The Grand Portage Lodge & Casino were evacuated for 10 hours on May 18 when a bomb scare caused a shutdown of activities. Both the lodge and casino were re-opened after police, using bomb-sniffing dogs, were unable to find any sign of explosives in the buildings during a 4½-hour search. The phone call was received at the front desk, and Sheriff Dave Wirt said officers have a couple of leads they are following up on.
Fifth-graders from Sawtooth Elementary School planted 300 white spruce seedlings in the gravel pit at Judge C.R. Magney State Park on May 22 to observe Arbor Month. DNR foresters helped get the project started.

A six-pound brook trout caught last Saturday by Wes and Buck Smith in Lost Lake surely must be in line for some kind of prize! It’s a pound heavier than any that have been weighed in at Midway Service, according to Harold Benson.
Ernest Mailloux, summer resident at Devil’s Track River, is in the local hospital because of a heart ailment.
Flowers decorated the stage for the annual style show at the local high school last Wednesday evening. About 60 girls of grades 7 to 12 participated. Mrs. Lois Staples, instructor of home economics, was faculty advisor for the event.

H.J. Webber, principal of the Maple Hill School, wishes to announce that he will give violin and piano lessons in the vicinity of Grand Marais, beginning June 1. All those who are interested to see him, phone 4-W.
Jesse Gapin and son Robert drove in from Hungry Jack today. They report the roads fairly good, but a little rough in places.
The Arrowhead Hotel has opened for the tourist season. A new sign graces the front of the building.
The Tourist Hotel and Hotel Sterling are open the year around.
E.L. Lindzy and Alex Boostrom were apprehended last Saturday by game wardens Ott and Johnson for having in their possession one illegally caught beaver hide.
There will be a dance at the Colvill town hall May 28. Everybody is invited.
The Motor Inn and the Midway Service Station have each installed a new gasoline tank.
