At their May 22 meeting the Cook County Board of Commissioners will take a first-hand look at a revised ordinance allowing all-terrain vehicles on county roads. The proposed ordinance would allow ATV use in the road right of way shoulder and inside bank or slope of most county roads with 23 exceptions.
Sawtooth Elementary third-graders completed their tree planting project this week. Roy Steinbrecher’s class sorted and planned for the planting of 1,800 trees on school property along with a trip to the school forest on County Road 14.

A fire on May 11 destroyed a home in Pine Mountain Trailer Court on County Road 8 near Devil Track Lake. Flames were coming out of the windows by the time firemen arrived, and there was heavy smoke throughout the structure. A neighbor who called the fire department said he heard an explosion. The building is considered a total loss.
A section of Cook County Road 85 known as the Rockwood Loop will soon be vacated and replaced by a new connection to the Gunflint Trail near the westerly edge of the Rockwood Lodge property. Rick Austin and his family, owners of the lodge, propose to construct the new segment at their expense. The old road will be vacated only after construction of the new segment is completed.

MAY 18, 1967
The new Grand Marais Art Colony folder is off the press with an attractive cover showing the Art Colony sign. The summer’s classes begin June 26 this year and end Aug. 18.
After 30 years in the store business, Tom Hansen’s new store was reported broken into last Saturday night. Early Sunday morning the door was found standing open. Beer, cigarettes and a small amount of cash were taken. Several are under suspicion, and they are not local boys, it was reported.
The Henry Lindskogs are expected back from Florida soon and plan to spend the summer here with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Helke, who formerly owned a farm in Rosebush.
90 YEARS AGO
MAY 19, 1927
Tuesday at 12:30 a fire alarm was sounded, the home of Frank Kimball being in flames. Quick work on the part of the fire department saved the home from being destroyed. Some damage was done to the house and to household goods.
Peter LeSage has remodeled the kitchen in his restaurant.
The alley running from the People’s Supply Company store north is being graded.
Postal Inspector Fleming came to town to check up on the local postmaster.
Tom Savor, mail bus driver, is on a short vacation. He will return to work in a few days.
L.G. Lundquist has moved out of the Tire Shop and is for the present out of business. He will put up a building on the corner north of Hussey’s.
