Don’t expect anything to happen any time soon regarding the Cook County Community Center’s revitalization plan. The county board voted Tuesday to put the project on “hold” indefinitely, or until communications can be improved between the county, the City of Grand Marais and the Cook County School District. The decision followed a long discussion during which the commissioners repeatedly expressed frustration with the lack of input and feedback from the other two entities which are part of the undertaking.

The ninth annual Sawtooth Mountain Chess Championship will be played April 27 at Sven & Ole’s. Participants qualified through the preliminary matches held in March and April; a total of 36 students attempted to qualify for the championship round.

The former Grand View Resort in Lutsen is changing. The pie-shaped wedge of land across from Hansen’s True-Value is becoming a place to visit and enjoy as the township supervisors unveiled blueprints of the park proposed for the site.

A short-term lease for North House Folk School to rent the old U.S. Forest Service garages/ parking lot on Highway 61 was approved by the city council at a special meeting April 23. The lease runs from May 1 through Sept. 30. This period will provide classroom space for the first summer of the folk school being developed here by Mark Hansen of Grand Marais.

APRIL 27, 1967

Boats have been lying outside the Schroeder harbor here waiting for repairs on the railroad, which had a bad washout from last week’s rainstorm. Last Monday night as the moon made a silvery path across the lake, a sparkling ship lay like a jeweled brooch on the lake’s quiet bosom.

In spite of illness and so many being away a fair-sized crowd attended the fellowship supper last Sunday evening at the Hovland Trinity Lutheran Church.

The Hovland Café, which for the past six summers has been operated by Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ordean, will be operated this summer by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Neilsen. Mrs. Ordean is in Doctor’s Hospital, Phoenix, Ariz., where she has had major surgery and will be unable to return to Hovland this summer.

90 YEARS AGO
APRIL 28, 1927

The Community Restaurant has finished redecorating the big dining room and is ready for the summer rush of tourists.

Lost – A large fountain pen. Finder will please return pen to this office.

Miss Madge Chapman, teacher at Mineral Center, was in town over the weekend.

The library is richer by 12 books from Mrs. Andert and seven from Mrs. Bally.

Two trucks collided Wednesday evening at the courthouse. Both drivers escaped injury and the trucks were only slightly damaged.
