Three Grand Portage residents discovered human skeletal remains while hiking near the Grand Portage State Park on April 14. After local law enforcement personnel processed the scene, the remains were delivered to the Ramsey County medical examiner for forensic scrutiny. No foul play is suspected, said Cook County Sheriff Mark Falk.

The Tofte Town Board approved minor changes to the proposed Surfside development’s 26 residential units and utility building, separating them from county guidelines governing signage and outbuildings. Developer Dennis Rysdahl explained the proposed changes, including elimination of lakeside lots and adding splashes of color on windows and doors reminiscent of Norwegian fishing villages. “It’s a contemporary re-interpretation of traditional forms,” Rysdahl said.

APRIL 21, 1997

What it takes to form a historical district was discussed by the Grand Marais Planning Commission at its April meeting last week. The city council had asked the planners to look into the idea of forming a historical district on the waterfront to preserve the character of the area.

Clark Baldwin has been named president of the Cook County State Bank in Grand Marais. He said his main goal is to improve the bank’s mortgage products and stabilize staffing at the relatively new institution. “With the Aitkin bank relationship, we have the capacity to handle larger businesses,” he said.

APRIL 20, 1967

Among the new residents of Schroeder is a black-masked individual who visited the Star of the North and the Rockwells next door – a large raccoon!

Corpsmen work crews at the Isabella Job Corps Conservation Center are presently hard at work improving the campground area at Nine Mile Lake, located in the Tofte Ranger District of Superior National Forest. The project mainly involves the removal of selected trees to enable the growth of more ground vegetation. The trees being removed present an unsightly appearance, as well as being potential hazards.

Word was received this week of the recent death of James Smith, former local county engineer in the ’20s and ’30s. He began his work here in January 1920 following the resignation of Engineer H.A. LeSueur in the fall of 1919. Smith was in charge of more road construction than any other engineer either since or before.

90 YEARS AGO
APRIL 21, 1927

The county board moved and carried that the county build a garage 30 feet by 60 feet.

A little child’s zipper overshoe was lost near the Brule River. Finder please return to Mrs. Axel Berglund for reward.

The small 5-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Rousau of Grand Portage was drowned Sunday when she fell off a two-plank bridge into a creek. She was found quite a ways below the bridge several hours later.
