Colly Norman, a Cook County High School grad who is a senior at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, was one of five men given the Duluth Firefighter Department Lifesaver Award last week for saving the life of a man who was having a heart attack. The victim, a 52-year-old who had just finished working out at UMD’s Sports and Health Center when he collapsed, underwent heart bypass surgery and has made a complete recovery.

The county board has sent a notice to property owners to be prepared for fire this spring, as a dangerous fire season is expected in northern Minnesota.

APRIL 14, 1997

An ash pile that caused a major mud slide across Highway 61 at Schroeder in 1993 was in the news again early this month when a leachate spill dumped 300,000 to 400,000 gallons of contaminated water into Taconite Harbor and Lake Superior. The spill ruptured the clay dike of a collection pond below the ash pile, allowing the leachate to escape. The leachate is contaminated with chemicals absorbed by the water as it washes through the ashes, a spokesman for LTV Steel Corporation said.

The tourist information business in Grand Marais will be taken over by the Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce on May 1. The city council approved the transfer of space for the information office from the Tip of the Arrowhead to the Chamber of Commerce April 9. However, as a condition of approval, council stipulated that all businesses be treated equally by the tourist information office, both members and non-members of the Chamber of Commerce.

APRIL 13, 1967

The Grand Portage Brownies meet Wednesdays after school at the old Community Building, and after losing some of their pent-up energies, the girls practiced making puppets move and speak. The Brownies made their own puppets from rags and paper, and are thinking of putting on a puppet show for their mothers.

Doug Ray, who has been employed at Merv’s Barber Shop the past two years, will leave soon for Crystal, Minnesota (near Minneapolis) to be employed there. He is married and has one son.

Hjalmer O. Pederson of Schroeder has retired from service on the Great Lakes after 35 years working as a wheelsman and crane operator. Hjalmer said he expects to take it easy for a time, but his plans are somewhat indefinite.

90 YEARS AGO
APRIL 14, 1927

Louis F. Falk left Tuesday on the bus for Duluth where he will take the train from there to New York, where he will sail for his old home in Sweden which he has not seen in 36 years. He expects to be gone about seven weeks.

To whom it may concern: Reports that have been circulated about my going to Duluth to be married are false.

A Cadillac car with seven men went through to Port Arthur Monday. The men will be employed on a boat there.

John A. Johnson Jr. and Bert Hart fished at Trout Lake last week, catching the limit.
