The county commissioners’ room was filled to standing room only on Tuesday as more than 125 residents crowded in to hear and express opinions on the pending ordinance that would allow ATVs on county roads. After more than 40 comments from the public, pro and con, the commissioners referred the ordinance back to committee for revision and fine tuning.
Residents at Tofte’s annual meeting asked the town board to investigate possible public housing as well as other uses on the 29-acre parcel adjacent to Birch Grove.

The Cook County News-Herald has acquired the One Hour Photo business of OK Video in Grand Marais. The photo lab and related retail operations, renamed “Express Photo,” have moved from the OK Video location to the News-Herald offices on Broadway.
The Grand Marais City Council is holding a special meeting on April 2 to consider proposals for the sought-after garages donated to the city by the U.S. Forest Service. Four different proposals will be considered. They are from the Grand Marais Art Colony, the Cook County Historical Society, North House Folk School and a private group headed by the owners of Eight Broadway.

MARCH 23, 1967
Clarence Everson was injured while at work last week. A tree fell across his chest and face. He was in the local hospital for a time but is at home now.
A tour of the Erie Mining Company Taconite Harbor plant with special emphasis on the $12 million expansion program was shown and discussed by Lions Vice President Robert Frey at the March Lions Club meeting. Following the tour, dinner was served at the company cafeteria.
Daniel L. Maryland, a Duluth ophthalmologist, will examine eye patients at the North Shore Hospital on Saturday. Call for an appointment.

MARCH 24, 1927
Reports have been made to the Game and Fish Department that fish offal has been thrown into Lake Superior by some commercial fishermen.
The firemen held a meeting Monday night in the fire hall. One of the topics of discussion was the purchase and installation of the new fire whistle, which was installed at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the Village Hall. The new whistle was found to be satisfactory by the public.
Joe Thomas, local trapper, of 22 mile post, was lucky enough to get two silver foxes last week.
