The Minnesota Department of Revenue has informed Tofte Township by letter that the town’s status as owners of Birch Grove makes them a “landlord” and thereby subject to property tax. The building and surrounding land were purchased last year from ISD 166 for $170,000.

For the past five weeks, a group of peace activists has occupied 8th District Congressman Jim Oberstar’s office in Duluth. Their goal is to convince Oberstar to vote against further funding for the Iraq war, including the $93 billion supplemental funding bill that was due for a vote sometime this week.

MARCH 17, 1997

Possible development of county lands at the end of the Old Ski Hill Road above Grand Marais was on the agendas of both the county board and the Economic Development Authority last Tuesday. The proposal from the EDA to the county board was this: deed the 400 acres of county land at the end of the Old Ski Hill Road to the EDA who will manage it, in combination with 200 acres of city-owned land in the same area, and develop it as one entity in a way that will boost business in Grand Marais.

Stephen F. Krueger of Tofte is retiring after 21 years as a Tofte town supervisor. He was first elected in 1975 after helping to reorganize the town which had been disbanded during the years of the Great Depression.

MARCH 16, 1967

Mrs. Theresa Bockovich, who is visiting in St. Paul, was on “Dialing for Dollars” on WCCO and won a dollar and a box of Girl Scout cookies.

Two hundred and fifty acres of cut-over forest land have been reforested by applying tree seed from an airplane on the Tofte Ranger District. During the past two weeks a U.S. Forest Service single engine airplane dropped 8 million red pine, jack pine, white spruce and yellow birch seeds on selected areas.

Upwards of 100 snowmobiles left Saganaga Landing at 8:45 Saturday morning, commencing the annual trip to Ely. The day was clear and bright and the trail was hard-packed all the way.

90 YEARS AGO
MARCH 17, 1927

As a means of keeping the maintenance crews and equipment better prepared for keeping the Minnesota trunk highways open in winter, the State Highway Department expects to complete a program of erecting state-owned shop and office buildings in each of the 16 maintenance districts within the next two years.

Miss Elvie Bowers, teacher of domestic science and art in the Grand Marais high school, passed away suddenly Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Sam Bally, where she boarded. Miss Bowers came from Thornsburg, Iowa last September and was 27 years old. She was of a quiet and retiring disposition but had won the affection and respect of all who met her, in school and socially.
