MARCH 2, 2007

U.S. and Canadian children will be exempt from new rules that will require travelers to show passports when entering the U.S. at land or sea borders, a move aimed at helping families and school groups. Children entering the United States by air will still be required to show passports.

From gills to bugs and boughs, Rep. David Dill’s Game and Fish Forestry Division has been working late to complete its agenda. The Crane Lake DFLer’s panel heard bills that would allow anglers to use two lines, limit bough harvest without a permit, ban campers from bringing firewood into state forests, and allow a voluntary walk on private land for hunting and fishing.

MARCH 3, 1997

Work will begin on the courthouse renovation and addition project this week. Despite objections from the state auditor in regard to the financing package funding the work and an unanswered request to the state attorney general for an opinion on that package, the county is proceeding with the work.

The northeastern Minnesota moose herd seems to be holding its own after two tough winters, according to results of this winter’s moose survey. A DNR deer biologist said the herd’s population estimate of 3,960 moose was probably low because weather conditions extended the aerial survey into midwinter when the animals are difficult to see in heavy conifer cover.

50 YEARS AGO
MARCH 2, 1967

Stanley Ketchmark, Reservation River, 27 miles northeast of Grand Marais, stood in his doorway Monday morning and shot a 100-pound Siberian timber wolf about 400 yards from shore on Lake Superior. Another wolf got away. Donald Johnson walked out on the ice with Ketchmark to retrieve the carcass. They carried a stepladder between them as a safety measure in case they stepped onto a crack in the ice.

The U.S. weather observer for this area reports that this February was the coldest February in the past nine years. It was colder than some Januarys, he said.

A 68-year-old Swedish pulp cutter with Penta Woods Logging Camp north of Tofte was found dead in a camp building last Thursday, where he died of an apparent heart ailment.

90 YEARS AGO
MARCH 3, 1927

The Grand Marais All-Stars invaded Two Harbors last Saturday night and were defeated by the speedy Two Harbors Y.M.C.A. team buy a score of 23 to 9. The local boys lacked that well-rounded team development found in the opposing team during the first half, missing many shots for the goal, while the Y-boys connected with most of their tries.

There is some “wise duck” in our village that made the remark that I deal in intoxicating liquor and have police protection. The one or party that said this is a liar and I can prove it. — Frank Cherry
