Tofte supervisors and residents were disappointed to hear that the proposed U.S. Forest Service ATV Travel Plan will not include a connection in Tofte to the upper trails in Superior National Forest. A Forest Service spokesman said the road engineers decided against opening the existing logging road to ATVs, as favored by the township, mainly because it’s a long stretch of wetlands.

Grand Marais has the attention of the nation again. This time as a winter destination spot for an unusual vacation that will be aired on the Fine Living Network next fall. The show, which will feature five spots in the nation where families can have unusual winter vacations, will focus on winter fun in Cook County on two of them – curling in Grand Marais and dogsledding and ice fishing at Gunflint Lodge.

FEB. 24, 1997

Grand Marais Mayor Gail Englund’s first informal coffee hour attracted 15 people, most of them interested in talking about snowmobiles. The Feb. 18 “Mayor’s Coffee Hour” was held at the Blue Water Café, and the full range of reaction to the presence of snowmobiles in town was heard.

T.L. Construction of International Falls won the contract for construction of the Cook County courthouse addition and remodeling the existing courthouse on Feb. 18 when the county board of commissioners unanimously accepted their bid of $3,097,134.

FEB. 23, 1967

On Tuesday a moving van came to get the furniture and belongings from the Congregational parsonage. Pastor and Mrs. Allan Fisher and son Mark left the first of the month to go to New York city, where Pastor Fisher is serving as youth minister at Riverside Church.

The East Bay has been completely filled the past five weekends, reports James Pedersen, owner. Skiing conditions in the area have been excellent, and many large groups have taken advantage of this and scheduled trips to Cook County.

FEB. 24, 1927

Sylvia Anderson, Little Marais school teacher, married a Mr. Tucker, Coast Guard, stationed at Little Marais.

The state telephone inspector was in town on Saturday going over the local telephone company’s property.

Several of the young people went on a sliding party Wednesday night on the new “squeeze-a-way” bob.

Backlund brothers finished taking up ice for the season. Sixty-five tons were cut.

Eric Lovdahl of Scott’s camp, who has been under the weather for a week, is back at work.

Madge Chapman drove to Duluth last Saturday night and returned Sunday.

The physics class has started to study electricity. This field of work proves to be very interesting due to the numerous uses to which it may be put.
