Residents of Creechville will have to wait at least another year for promised public water and sewer hookups. The city engineer reviewed the findings of a funding assessment to extend the utilities to 21 Creechville residences during a public hearing Jan. 31. City council voted at its Jan. 24 work session to forego an application for a state grant this year, and instead concentrate on implementing the project in 2008.

The Tofte Town Board unanimously approved a motion to install permanent speed bumps at town expense next spring as far as the cemetery, after the Tofte Homestead Road was damaged – some claim deliberately – during the first winter storm. The township does not own the road and will inform the property owners by mail.

FEB. 10, 1997

Annual lodging tax totals slipped in the city of Grand Marais for the first year since the tax was established in 1988. According to figures supplied by the Office of the Cook County Auditor, the 1996 total for the city was $92,180, down $3,149 from the prior year. The city collects a 3 percent tax on all lodging receipts.

The Grand Marais planning commission is working on ideas for the city’s immediate and long-range future. Among the major ideas that the planners have under study are a general pattern of commercial development in the east side of town, and residential development in the west; generation of plans for downtown renovations and other aesthetic enhancements; new downtown street lights and additional beautification; and the promotion of pocket parks judiciously located in various parts of the city.

FEB. 9, 1967

A one-story frame house owned by Oscar Everson was completely destroyed by fire early Thursday morning. It is not known how the fire started.

Bethlehem Lutheran Church will soon install a two-manual Kilgen pipe organ, the board of trustees announced yesterday. The organ was formerly used by the Holy Trinity Church in Superior. The organ has over 500 pipes and will be installed in the choir balcony where the present Baldwin electronic organ is now located. It will be the first pipe organ in the county.

Gerald Gervais took two firsts in two snowmobile classes during the St. Paul Winter Carnival last weekend. One trophy was won in the 321-375 cc class, and one in the open expedition class. The races, that had 100 competitors, will be televised at a later date.

90 YEARS AGO
FEB. 10, 1927

William Mitchel, who has been employed at Forsythe’s camp, was brushed off a load of hay by a large branch while driving. He was brought to town last night and is under the doctor’s care. While not seriously injured, he is pretty badly bruised. His home is in Virginia.

Wednesday the school was entertained by a dog race which took place on the highway. John Quick’s dog kept in the lead.

The drug store had a telephone installed this week. Number 79.

Several of the young girls hiked to Maple Hill Tuesday evening and had lunch with Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Berglund.
