FEB. 2, 2007

A 23-year-old Minneapolis man was killed in a snowmobile accident last Saturday night on Devil Track Lake. The man was traveling alone when he apparently hit a bank and was thrown from his machine into a tree. He was found dead at the scene.

Great River Energy filed a conditional-use permit application with Cook County for a standby generator. The company proposes building an 18-megawatt standby generator in the Arrowhead region to help improve electricity reliability in Arrowhead Electric Cooperative’s area. The new system will provide back-up service during times when the main transmission line is out of service due to storm damage, and during times of routine maintenance.

FEB. 3, 1997

Irving Hansen appeared at the Jan. 27 county board meeting to argue for extension of County Road 39 to serve his new development, Legendary Lutsen. A road already exists to the area, but it belongs to the U.S. Forest Service. However, Hansen said the Forest Service was willing to grant him an easement if the county would trade them, mile for mile, some county roads.

In response to a Jan. 3 letter from the Grand Marais Art Colony, Grand Marais Mayor Gail Englund recommended to city council that June 16, 1997 be proclaimed Grand Marais Art Colony Day. The council deliberated briefly, and then unanimously passed a motion approving the proclamation. The action commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Art Colony’s birth.

50 YEARS AGO
FEB. 2, 1967

Dick Raiken just reported that some irresponsible person has shot off the top of the telephone pole at the entrance to the Tofte dump road. This is the only means of reporting a serious accident, sickness or other emergency and is very important. The line is maintained by the residents at Sawbill. Repair work was to start Wednesday morning. Let’s hope no trouble occurs. The culprit should be caught.

J. Henry Eliasen, who had served as Cook County attorney for 28 years, was the guest of honor at a courthouse party last Thursday. All courthouse employees were present to take part. Eliasen was first elected county attorney in 1934 and served continuously from that time except for one term of four years. Last fall he filed for judge of probate, a position he will now fill.

90 YEARS AGO
FEB. 3, 1927

Max P. Smith had a telephone installed at his residence this week.

Charles Ott and Arthur Johnson entertained at a 6 o’clock dinner Wednesday evening. In spite of the fact the oysters scorched and the beans failed to brown, it proved a delightful meal.

Charles Owenstine came in from his trapping country yesterday, bringing several nice fisher, one of which was alive.

Al Snyder of the Marshall-Wells Company is here doing business with local hardware houses.
