Down Memory Lane





10 Years Ago · June 7, 1999 • Eager buyers and sellers have been flocking to the Cook County Farmer’s Market, especially since the weather has been so nice on Saturdays. • Baccalaureate for the Class of 1999 was an evening of song, prayers, words of inspiration and congratulations, topped off with the usual Cook County bounty of sweet treats and beverages.

A bonus to the goodies was the chance to admire a brand-new mural painted by a group of seniors. Hans Toftey invited everyone to look at the mural recently painted on the hallway wall leading to the Family Resource Center rooms in the west wing of the school.

20 Years Ago · June 5, 1989 • Jane Gellner, CCHS business teacher, has been named the 1989-90 Teacher of the Year by the Cook County Education Association. Next spring her name will be submitted as the county’s nominee for Minnesota Teacher of the Year. • Thispast winter Mark Adams has been using his horses to give hay rides to guests at Lutsen and Grand Portage. It is an added attraction for guests coming to the area.

He said he would bring his horses up the Trail if there was a demand. • The 20 bluebird houses that surround the city’s golf course are a product of the non-game donations that are taken in on state income tax forms.

Tim Webb of the DNR got the material and cut them out. The Boy Scouts, for their community service project, nailed them together in the school workshop.

Finally, last month, the volunteers waded through the snow and placed them.

50 Years Ago · June 4, 1959 • A 3-year-old Tofte boy died Wednesday evening at the North Shore Hospital after he apparently suffered a fall in his home and cut his arm above the wrist.

Doctors said he may have also suffered a head injury. • At least 21 of the Cook County High School graduating class of 59 plan to continue their education; five will find immediate employment; three will be married; one will enter the Air Force; and the remainder are still undecided.

90 Years Ago · June 4, 1919 • Memorial Day was observed in every community of the county. Gatherings with fitting programs were held at Maple Hill, Hovland, Tofte and Colvill. The day was ideal for outdoor exercises and the people turned out in large numbers. • “Lilly Snow,” “Pansy White” and “Sambo Green” will sing minstrel songs that will make you glad you were at the Princess next Saturday afternoon and evening. • Thecommencement exercises of the Grand Marais High School were held last Wednesday evening.

There were only two graduates this year: Grace Samskar and Hulda Alida Nelson. • Do you like to gossip? No?

Well, a great many people will not admit that they are fond of that particular sport, but just the same you always find them ready to contribute to the fund of knowledge.

It is a clever person who knows when just enough has been said.
