10 YEARS AGO | JAN. 26, 2007

The county commissioners gave the go-ahead to highway maintenance supervisor Bill Parish to begin right of way acquisition on several small parcels of land along County Road 7 in preparation for a major road renovation project. The easements are needed to accommodate storm sewer outlets, new curb and gutter, and sidewalks.

The newly-elected school board at Great Expectations School spent much of its first two meetings discussing the advantages and disadvantages of various school calendars before voting to adopt the more traditional calendar used by ISD 166.

20 YEARS AGO | JAN. 27, 1997

It looks like another bad year for wintering owls in Cook County, with death by starvation being reported. It is expected the worst is yet to come. Most of the starved owls found have been boreal owls. It is the second year in a row for such numbers of starved owls here – an unusual occurrence, according to wildlife officials.

The first burglary of the year came just before dawn on Jan. 22 when Wally’s Spur Station in Grand Marais was targeted by thieves. According to Chief of Police Tom Billings, the time of the break-in was between 4 and 6 a.m. The only property damage was a broken window. However, a safe was taken from the office. It contained an undisclosed amount of cash.

50 YEARS AGO | JAN. 26, 1967

Ralph Kohlorn, long a Greyhound bus driver on the North Shore, died recently in Duluth.

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Spelde of Duluth had a narrow escape Sunday afternoon when the plane they were flying crashed on the Devil’s Track Lake ice. The two were taken to the local hospital. Both had facial cuts and bruises, and had stitches taken in their faces. Both are now out of the hospital.

Due to the terrific winds Tuesday night, a storm window was blown off the school at Grand Portage.

Colleen Peterson, daughter of the Dave Petersons, was on the Bozo TV show on Jan. 4.

85 YEARS AGO | JAN. 28, 1932

Car owners are asked to be very careful when driving about in Grand Marais in order to avoid accidents to coasters. Parents should warn their children of the danger of being run over by cars. Several reports of near tragedies have been reported. Let’s try to keep from having any coasting accidents this winter.

Father Thomas is now back and will conduct services as before. Mass is on the last Sunday of each month at 9 o’clock at Grand Marais Catholic Church.

Eleanor Backlund injured her face while sliding Monday, necessitating two stitches by Dr. Smith.
