A proposed ordinance that would open county roads for the use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) was presented to the Cook County Board Tuesday. But a decision on the draft, which was written by former county attorney Bill Hennessy, was delayed by at least a week in order to allow more time for legal review.

The two new school board members gave a nod to change at their first meeting on Monday, nominating and then voting in Leonard Sobanja as school board chair. Jane Mianowski, who has chaired the board for nine years, opened the meeting and inducted new board members Brian Sherburne and Bill Huggins. She then opened the floor for nominations for chair, and Sobanja won by a 3-2 vote.

A series of reflecting mirrors have been placed on posts along Highway 61 near the Spruce Creek southeast of Grand Marais in an attempt to reduce the number of deer killed by autos. In a cooperative project with the Conservation Department, a 50-mile stretch of the highway, 25 miles on each side of Grand Marais, will be under intensive study for a period of four years. Similar experiments in other states have ended with mixed results.

They explored the lake, had a big bonfire and lunch, and enjoyed themselves with games such as “Fox and Geese.”
