DEC. 15, 2006

Cook County Commissioner Bob Fenwick was elected president of the Association of Minnesota Counties.

Matt Geretschlaeger, director of the Economic Development Authority (EDA), told the county board that an optometrist who was one of two “anchor tenants” expected to occupy the Cedar Grove professional building has bailed out due to family problems. It is a “major blow,” the director commented.

DEC. 16, 1996

Eighteen people faced off with the Schroeder Township Board and three members of the Highway 61 Advisory Council on Dec. 3, expressing their concerns about the proposed changes to the highway through Schroeder. Issues debated were the need for sidewalks through the township, plans for parking lots near the river, and pedestrian safety near the Cross River.

Pending a favorable opinion from the county attorney, the former USFS building at the foot of the Gunflint Trail will be leased to Cook County Schools for the better part of 1997 while construction is in progress on the new school facility. The monthly rent was set at $1,000.

DEC. 15, 1966

Ed Ronning, who works with local fishermen, observed a huge white owl carry off one of the local ducks. He believes the owl will get them all if the owl can’t be taken care of in some way.

According to Joe Jurek, village marshal, snowmobiles must not use village streets. If they must reach outlying areas, they may use village alleys only in going to and coming from these areas. In any case, they may not trespass on private property.

The Future Nurses Group of Schroeder held a bake and Christmas item sale at the Northland Hardware store Saturday afternoon. Although there are only five girls in the group, the families helped them with baking etc., and $18 was taken in.

DEC. 16, 1926

Colbert Holte won the accordion that was given away by Lager Brothers at their dance at the Arrowhead Hotel Dec. 4.

Ragna and Olga Hanson of Hovland are now quarantined at their home with measles.
