Increased tourism and extended fishing seasons have led to increased marine activity after the Coast Guard’s Labor Day deadline, which has prompted Sen. Norm Coleman to urge the U.S. Coast Guard to extend its operation season at North Superior Station in Grand Marais, at a minimum, through the month of September. Although the local Coast Guard station is a seasonal unit currently operating from about Memorial Day to Labor Day, trout fishing is open until Sept. 30 and salmon fishing runs through October. Sheriff Mark Falk said in a separate letter that two times in the last four years during September, there have been significant search and rescue incidents on Lake Superior.
