Three Cook County varsity volleyball players received post-season honors this year for their outstanding performances on and off the court. Junior Sherri Donek was named Honorable Mention All-Conference by the coaches of the Polar Conference. Senior Jessica Nelson was named to the Academic All-State team in volleyball and was also awarded a Polar Conference Academic Award. Senior Bethany Bautch was named First Team All- Conference by the Polar Conference, and also played in the conference’s All-Star volleyball game as one of only 24 players from the conference to participate in the game.

Minnesota Power officials presented county commissioners with a two-year voluntary project aimed at reducing toxic emissions from the Taconite Harbor Energy Center plant. Minnesota Power will use cutting-edge technology to abate mercury, nitrogen oxide and sulfur dioxide pollution by 60 to 90 percent.

NOV. 25, 1996

Grand Portage National Monument will host its second annual winter open house Dec. 7, in order to support Cook County residents who are celebrating the season with good will, generosity and friendship. Normally closed through the winter season, the Great Hall will be open and its sills, mantels and tables trimmed with pine boughs.

The City of Grand Marais now has its own web page on the internet worldwide information system. The city’s address brings up “community page” on your internet computer screen. City officials said, in answer to questions of why the city was doing this, that it’s a means of providing information to the public about a wide range of pertinent topics.

NOV. 24, 1966

The injured finger of Gregory Hanson, son of the Ed Hansons, required surgery in treating it. He was hurt at playtime.

A snowy owl from the far north decorated the arrow on the Pure Oil sign at Danny Kehoe’s garage the other morning, and enjoyed the stares of startled observers, and then flew leisurely up the Cramer Road. Watch for him, kids!

The Birch Grove Elementary School faculty were hosts at an open house for the P-TA meeting on Nov. 15. Visitors went to each room where the teacher, sometimes with the help of students, explained and demonstrated some of the elementary programs.

Dewey Winterstrom has an old atlas that shows some strange place names. The book dates back to 1898. Among places named are Redmeyer, Clifton and Arthur. Gunflint Iron Mines are also listed.

90 YEARS AGO
NOV. 25, 1926

The biggest state public school “melon” in the history of Minnesota was sliced this week when the state auditor affixed his signature to 87 warrants covering annual and supplemental school aid. The amount to be distributed among the school districts of Cook County is $8,397.98, a check for which will be mailed to the county treasurer.

Gunner Ogren, who went deer hunting north of Pete Anderson’s Tuesday afternoon, was lost all during Tuesday night and part of Wednesday forenoon. A rescue party of men found him. He was none the worse for his experience, except that he was tired and hungry.

Tuesday evening Fred Swanson of Colvill shot a deer while he was walking home.
