Saturday School has been approved for ISD 166. The board voted unanimously at its meeting on Monday night to set up Saturday school for four hours each week as necessary, from 8 a.m. to noon. Saturday school will be used as a deterrent to improper behavior as well as an alternative to afterschool detentions and in-school suspensions.

The number of deer harvested during the 2006 firearms season will likely exceed 250,000, below the 2003 record harvest of 290,000, but still among the top five harvests in Minnesota, according to preliminary estimates from the DNR.

NOV. 18, 1996

Construction has begun on a new building for Grand Marais State Bank across the street from the post office on Highway 61. The new 7,400-square-foot facility is scheduled for completion in mid-August of next year. The current bank building, built in 1912, was added to in the middle ’30s and again in 1982. According to bank president Mike LaVigne, they have simply run out of room.

The Grand Marais City Council is working toward protection of the harbor and adjacent shoreline through the Minnesota Land Trust. The council has toured land around the harbor, and west through the municipal campground and wilderness area known as Sweetheart’s Bluff.

NOV. 17, 1966

Mr. Arthur Porter passed away at age 63 last Sunday. He organized the Lutsen Light & Power Company and built it into a countywide system which was eventually purchased by the Arrowhead Electric Cooperative at Lutsen.

Deer hunting success has been generally good in Cook County, it is believed. The west end of the county appears to have had better luckratio than the east. A 66 percent success rate was reported at Tofte as 26 out of 39 got their deer. Some 50 deer were reported taken from the Cascade area; Lutsen reported about 40 taken. There were no hunting casualties, and only a few “momentary lost” hunters who found their way out alone.

NOV. 18, 1926

Miss Eva Zimmerman has resigned her position at the bakery.

The Maple Hill school is closed for two weeks on account of scarlet fever.

Jake Burns had a slight wreck in Duluth with his truck. One man had part of his ear cut off.

Nick Yunk has returned to his work at the Murphy store after being laid up for a week or more with a bad cold.
