NOV. 10, 2006

A three-lot property in Cedar Grove Business Park reserved for the Minnesota DNR is back in circulation after a deal with the developers and the Economic Development Authority fell through. Originally the acreage was to be leased for a time period with a building to be constructed to DNR specifications and leased to the state agency. However, now the Department of Administration says the state can’t enter into lease agreements.

Five players on this year’s Cook County football squad were honored by the Polar League Conference this past week. In order to be eligible for All- Conference selection, players must be nominated by their head coach, voted in by the Polar League football coaches, and athletes can not have any Minnesota High School violations of any kind. Receiving the honors were Tait Sande, Andy Borud, Miles Drake, and Joe Hall, who were all named first team Polar Conference selections. Eric Brisson earned honorable mention.

NOV. 11, 1996

Dave Asproth of Grand Marais was named 1996 Fly Tyer of the Year by the Arrowhead Fly Fishers Club of Duluth. Asproth ties flies that imitate insects and creatures found in the North Shore and border lakes region and sells them in local shops.

New intersection signs identifying roads throughout the county are being installed by the Cook County Highway Department. The installation of road signs is part of the Enhanced 911 system that has been worked on for nearly two years. It is a major tangible step toward a single countywide addressing system so that emergency crews can locate any specific improved property in the county quickly and efficiently.

50 YEARS AGO
NOV. 10, 1966

William Bromberg, assistant superintendent at San Juan National Historic Site, Puerto Rico, has been appointed superintendent of Grand Portage National Monument. He is expected to arrive today. At Grand Portage, Bromberg succeeds Raymond Nelson, now an instructor at the National Park Service’s Stephen Mather Training Center at Harpers Ferry, W. Va.

The Club of the Year trophy was won by the Voyageur’s 4-H Club, with Mrs. Neal Grage as adult leader. The award was presented by Cook County Extension Agent Gerald Eisler to Mrs. Raymond Hahn at the 4-H Achievement Rally at the high school Nov. 4.

90 YEARS AGO
NOV. 11, 1926

Dr. O. McDaniel, director of preventable diseases for Minnesota’s Department of Health, has issued a warning that a disease called Telarema is prevalent among rabbits. There is a very noticeable scarcity of rabbits at this time, although they were very numerous during the early summer. This scarcity may be attributed to this disease, which can be transmitted to the human body by handling through an open wound or sore on the hands.

A special meeting of the Village Council was held Aug. 25, with the state fire marshal appearing before the board regarding the so-called John Anderson-Dave Lind fish house, located at Tourist Park in the village. The marshal ordered that the fish house be removed within five days, and the owners will be notified.

Joe and Oliver Anderson caught five wolves last week.

Oscar Lindskog shot a black fox on the Greenwood Lake road Sunday night.

Fred Brouilette and Robert Zimmerman have gone into the fishing business. Their first catch amounted to 10½ pounds.
