The sixth annual Grand Marais Fall Migration Birding Festival was held Oct. 27-29. More than 60 birders from seven states and Canada attended and were able to spot a total of 73 species of birds during the popular birding event. As is always the case, some new species were added to the festival’s bird list collected over the past five years.

The Vikings baseball field upgrade fund has received a generous $5,000 donation, but there are two conditions. The first is that the source of the donation remain anonymous, and the second is that this donation has to be matched by the community of Cook County. “We are well on the way to that match,” said Arleigh Jorgenson, Cook County High School baseball coach, who is helping to organize the project.

NOV. 4, 1996

After breaking loose from her mooring off Grand Portage, then slipping her tow line to an ore carrier attempting to rescue her, the Grampa Woo, a 95-foot excursion boat out of Beaver Bay was reported aground on the northeast shore of Passage Island north of Isle Royale late Thursday night. The daring rescue was observed by many from Highway 61 at the Mount Josephine overlook.

Two men from Michigan recovered the body of an apparent drowning victim on Oct. 26 from Trout Lake. The men were brothers-in-law of a man who disappeared and was presumed drowned in Trout Lake Aug. 29. The body is believed to be that of the man who disappeared, positive identification pending.

50 YEARS AGO
NOV. 3, 1966

A young Minneapolis man is being hunted in the wooded area near Alder Lake and two companions made their way back to civilization after two nights in the woods, suffering somewhat from the cold weather. The men reportedly were there to locate possible deer hunting areas and had planned to come back for the open season. Temperatures hovered in the 2 to 3 below zero zone there last night and a couple inches of snow covers the ground.

Taconite Harbor and the surrounding lake looked like a “Christmas City of the North” early one morning last week. At 4 a.m. on a still, clear morning nine boats lay out from the harbor waiting to get in and loaded. They were a-sparkle from stem to stern with brilliant lights and the sky was lit with shining stars.

90 YEARS AGO
NOV. 4, 1926

The regular meeting of the fire department was held Nov. 1. It was moved and carried that the fire department give a dance at the Wigwam on Nov. 11, and that the fire siren should be installed at once. Also, the bell to be installed with motor-driven attachment with approval of village council.

Harris McKenzie, who was well-known in Cook County and owned a home not far from Beaver Bay, dropped dead on Oct. 21 on the street out at Spokane, Wash., where he had been in business for some time. His body was cremated.

William Drouillard turned his car over at Midway, halfway between here and Grand Portage. He was bringing in the election returns from Grand Portage. The car is a total wreck.
