Construction of a local skateboard park at the Community Center inched closer to reality Wednesday when Grand Marais city councilors voted unanimously to contribute $20,000 toward the project. To date, about $100,000 has been raised for the park, with more fundraisers planned. The total cost of the park is estimated to be between $205,400 and $225,400.

The Grand Marais campus of ISD 166 held its first lock-down drill this week. The drill required that students leave the halls and go into a classroom where the lights were turned off, the shades were drawn and the door was locked. School officials told the school board the exercise went well.

The Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery of Grand Marais has embarked on a private fundraising campaign to purchase sculptor Paul Granlund’s bronze “The Swimmers” for permanent mounting outside the gallery’s front entrance.

The Cook County sheriff ’s department was contacted by a resident concerning a briefcase left in a local cabin in Grand Marais that contained $190,000 in Canadian cash. The guest appeared to have left without paying for his last day, but that was because he was already in jail in Thunder Bay after being arrested for the theft of $193,742 in Canadian and U.S. currency from the Municipal Employees Credit Union in Thunder Bay, where he was employed.

OCT. 20, 1966

The KDAL-TV program Bozo on Friday afternoon will have Paige Wahlstrom, 4, and Ruth Ann Hedstrom, 5, taking part in the children’s group. It’s Ruth Ann’s birthday.

The partridge hunters on the Sawbill road Saturday had a hard time keeping on the road. Most of them landed in the ditch sooner or later.

Sam Salifsberg is back in Grand Portage. He formerly owned the mill the Ryden brothers now have.

OCT. 21, 1926

Notice: A story has been circulated in the village that the lights in my house are paid for by the village. That is not true. I pay direct to the Grand Marais Light and Power Company for what lights I use and always have.

Harry Goldish brought up a new Lake Superior Fish truck one day last week.

Joe Zerbach caught two silver and three red foxes in the last week.

The order of the state fire marshal demanding the installation of electric cook stoves to replace oil stoves has been rescinded, and the oil stoves replaced.

Cornelius Hall and John Johnson of Colvill had a minor accident last Friday night. While passing each other, the wheels of their cars locked. Hall’s car was thrown off the road, and both cars were damaged.

An Eastern Star Lodge will be organized in Grand Marais next Saturday. The members of the Two Harbors lodge will have charge of the organization.
