Students at Grand Portage Elementary School will be honored in St. Paul next week when their artwork, inspired by the paintings and drawings of the late George Morrison (a Grand Portage tribal member) will go on exhibit at the Minnesota Museum of American Art. The work will be installed in a special room next to a large exhibit of Morrison’s art and will be part of the George Morrison Family Art Day at the museum on Oct. 8.
The Cook County eighth-grade volleyball team took home the championship trophy after winning the 10-team Cherry Invitational Junior High Tournament on Sept. 30. The team split its first match, then won the next six matches en route to taking the championship.

On Oct. 13 members of the Vintage Times Classic Car Club of Duluth will bring 20 beautifully groomed vehicles to Grand Marais for a car show and an afternoon “downtown drive-around.”
Two local residents, Tom Westby and Denny FitzPatrick, returned home from fighting fires out west. They were fighting a fire in Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming, and were gone for 60 days. Here in Cook County there were 25 fires during the summer of 1996. The worst was the South Temperance fire, which consumed about 4,600 acres.

The Rustic Inn is no more. Fire early Tuesday morning destroyed the building; by the time the fire department arrived, the building was engulfed in flames, and nothing could be saved. The building was owned by Lucy Blake and her brother Bob, and dated back to the 1920s.
John M. Blackwell, who has just retired as police chief in Grand Marais, was the guest at an appreciation dinner given by members of the village council last Friday. He served on the force for the past 12 years. He will be replaced by Dick Bystrom, the new police chief.
Local peace officers are investigating the latest vandalism in Grand Marais that occurred last Thursday night. Some persons drove their car over the high school football field, doing an estimated $500 worth of damage. However, the field was worked over and put in playable shape for the following night’s game with Cloquet.

OCT. 7, 1926
Football, although comparatively unknown in the Grand Marais high school, threatens to become a popular sport here. The boys from Tofte have challenged the Grand Marais High to a game of football, to be played Friday night, Oct. 15.
The Game and Fish Department planted six cans of smallmouth bass in the North Brule River today.
The forest rangers have placed a motor boat on Gunflint Lake to be used on boundary patrol during the fall and next summer.
