SEPT. 22, 2006

With a Border Patrol project on hold while waiting for the federal decision, the EDA board spent more time Tuesday discussing the potential development of the Old Ski Hill property that has been on the drawing board for many years. EDA board members reviewed the latest Cook County proposal that offers to sell to them the approximately 560 acres of county-owned tax forfeit land and city-owned property, all within Grand Marais city limits, for $775,000. The city has not yet discussed the joint resolution.

Thanks to the Booster Club, the Cook County Vikings football team has a new five-man blocking sled. It is the first new blocking sled the program has had in more than 30 years; the Booster Club’s donation was $3,000.

SEPT. 23, 1996

Grand Marais city police are investigating a Sept. 18 break-in at the Cook County High School. An initial investigation indicated that the crime took place between noon Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday. There were no suspects. The door of a storage building behind the school was broken, and several footballs and soccer balls were stolen. The value of the stolen items was set at between $200 and $300, plus the cost to repair the door and shed.

Marion Wright, widow of Pappy Wright and their son and daughter, John and Barbara Wright, watched as the Grand Marais Little League field was dedicated on Sept. 15.

50 YEARS AGO
SEPT. 22, 1966

A 41-year-old Foxboro, Wisconsin man escaped without a scratch when the gasoline transport truck he was driving left the highway a half-mile west of the Rock Cut early Monday morning. In trying to get the truck back on the road it tipped and slid on its side on the highway and caught fire. The driver scrambled out of the cab opposite the driver’s side and made it out before the flames engulfed the whole vehicle. The tank contained well over 7,000 gallons of gasoline.

Almost half of the 90 vehicles checked by traffic officers in a “light drive” in Grand Marais Tuesday night were found to have some violation, according to Don Ziesmer, local highway patrolman. Forty-one vehicles, most of them with lamps out of adjustment, were found to have defective equipment. In addition, four drivers were found with improper driver’s licenses.

SEPT. 23, 1926

Ed Dalbec, who has been fishing with J.G. Scott for a number of years, has purchased rigging and will now fish.

John Hanson from Duluth has erected a new home on the shore of Lake Superior two miles east of Grand Marais, moving in with his family last Wednesday. He has joined the ranks of the North Shore fishermen.

Harry Helmerson and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bissell left Tuesday for Northern Light Lake to hunt ducks.

Andrew Shold’s children of Rosebush are out of school because of sickness.
