The U.S. Department of Homeland Security could build a 34,000-square-foot building at the Cedar Grove Business Park by 2008, if all goes as planned. “This is no child’s play here. It’s the real deal, Matt Geretschlaeger, Economic Development Authority director, said. Geretschlaeger told the EDA board that this was possibly the largest economic opportunity in the history of the EDA.
Local residents saved a visitor from probable drowning in Devil Track Lake after they observed the would-be victim swimming after a small motorboat that had come untied from shore and was being pulled across the lake by gusty winds. Witnesses said it appeared that the man would be able to reach the watercraft without incident, but after a few minutes of intense swimming he over-exerted himself. Upon reaching the boat, he yelled for help, unable to climb aboard or hold onto the boat.

AUG. 12, 1996
A 12-year-old girl from Inver Grove Heights was killed by lightning Aug. 6 at Borderland Lodge. She was walking with her parents and two other adults at about 8:45 p.m. when the lightning struck as they were heading back to their cabin to get out of the rain. Her mother was also seriously injured, but was listed in stable condition the following day at St. Luke’s after being airlifted to Duluth. The girl’s father was knocked to the ground by the lightning, but neither he nor the other two adults were injured.
A new bell tower at the Cook County museum was dedicated during Fisherman’s Picnic.
A minimum bid of $250,000 for the former Forest Service building and property in Grand Marais was approved by the Cook County commissioners Aug. 6. The building sits at the foot of the Gunflint Trail on Highway 61 and was given back to the county when the Forest Service moved last spring to its new headquarters on the western outskirts of Grand Marais.

The new 10-mile stretch of Highway 61 between Reservation River and Grand Portage was unofficially opened to traffic Tuesday afternoon. There is still some final construction to complete, however. The work on constructing the road began in the spring of 1965 by Hibbing contractors.
Some strange animals have been spotted in the area lately. Clarence Lakin and Harold Wessels reported seeing caribou on one of their trips to Pigeon River where they work. John Twiest maintains he saw a mountain lion that went for his dog. The guests at Naniboujou saw a rare sight last Wednesday when a pair of large moose sauntered toward the river. Some of the other guests had never seen a moose.

To account for his actions in the street, looked upon as suspicious by a policeman, a man 45 years old told the judge he was making mud pies. He was sentenced to 10 days in jail. As alibis go, speaking of pies, it was a lemon.
Mrs. Emil Hall caught one 8- and one 6-pound trout while trolling in Lake Superior Sunday.
R.C. Emery, reporter for the St. Paul Dispatch, is in Grand Marais. He has visited every county in the state and is glad he came to Cook County last, because if he had not, he says he would not have been able to appreciate the scenery in other parts of the state.
John Hagberg of Lutsen has been on a trip to Minneapolis to have his insurance adjusted for his recent personal injuries caused in an automobile accident.
Charles Croft was taken with an attack of appendicitis and taken to St. Luke’s Hospital Sunday by Edward Brouette. His appendix broke on the way down and was operated on half an hour after reaching the hospital.
