The woman said she “literally somersaulted” into the river to avoid a large boulder that broke loose and came careening toward her. After climbing out of the river into knee-deep water and struggling to keep her footing, a rescue crew reached her and raised her in an evacuation chair about 70 feet to the road surface.

Fortunately, nothing but bruises and scrapes were found on a woman and six young passengers who were involved in an accident a half-mile east of the county line on Highway 61. Two vans full of Girl Scouts were on their way to Canada on July 27 when one of the vans left the highway, careened up an embankment and hit a tree. The driver said she swerved to avoid an animal.
