A lone lightning strike in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness more than a week ago has created the nightmare that everyone on the Gunflint Trail has dreaded for the last five years – wildfire in the thousands of acres of trees downed by straight-line winds in 1999. Because of the extremely dry conditions, the U.S. Forest Service realized the danger immediately, and one resident described the situation as the “worst case scenario.”

At the July 11 meeting, Schroeder Township Clerk Carol Tveekrem informed the board that their request for exemption from the Help America Vote Act was denied by the state Legislature. Tveekrem said the exemption for townships was opposed by organizations representing the disabled, regardless of population. This decision means that Schroeder must use the new voting machines mandated by HAVA in its annual March elections, and pay fees for programming and ballots to the county. There are fewer than 200 voters in Schroeder, which will now have to bear the additional cost.

A man with no known address was arrested in Grand Marais on July 14 for a break-in and attempted burglary at the Cobblestone Realty building at Highway 61 and County Road 12 during the evening of July 13. An employee found the front door pried open and the office safe had pry marks on it but was secure. Pry marks were also discovered on the door leading into the retail space in the lower portion of the building. Nothing was reported stolen.

A type of roadside vandalism more common than the pillaging of gardens and orchards is the ruthless foray on wild shrubs and flowers, the dogwood and mountain laurel, for example, and every other flowering plant beautiful and rare enough to covet. The motor has brought every species within the range of the spoiler. Since the woods and meadows cannot be policed, laws forbidding the destruction of wildflowers in danger of disappearing are ineffective. The only hope of the plants’ long survival outside of well-protected reservations lies in appeals to the motorists for forbearance. The “hikers” as a rule have the naturalist’s feeling for wild growth and the black sheep of their tribe have not the advantage of a capacious vehicle to store their loot.

Several of the young people indulged in a wiener roast down on the rocks last Wednesday evening.

Work is going merrily on at the new Grand Marais Light and Power Company building across the bay.
