JUNE 30, 2006

Consensus won at a Tofte open house Monday when the 50-plus citizens attending rejected the Option 2 town center design that would re-route Highway 61 to the north and make the present highway corridor a local street. Most people had come prepared to argue but with little knowledge about the two-year planning process leading up to the two options for the town center.

A head-on collision in Tofte injured three people on June 25. Both vehicles were totaled in the morning accident.

The Gunflint Trail Historical Society just celebrated its first birthday as the group became partners with the U.S. Forest Service on the Chik Wauk Lodge restoration project. Last week negotiators signed off on a Memorandum of Understanding, the first of three document endorsements that will lead to the historic lodge becoming a Gunflint Trail museum.

20 YEARS AGO

JULY 1, 1996

The Temperance Lake fire that took off June 14 when lightning struck a spruce tree has been declared “contained.” The fire spread rapidly from South Temperance Lake, just 18 miles north of Lutsen and within range of cabins on Gust and Tait lakes. By June 19, over 100 personnel were engaged in fighting it. In all about 4,000 acres were burned.

On a 4-1 vote, the Grand Marais City Council renewed the 3 percent city lodging tax with a five-year review, but no automatic sunset clause. “Personally I think it should be up for review with a sunset clause,” said Councilor Ron Lund, who cast the dissenting vote. In December 1995, the city came close to losing its lodging tax when the sunset clause neared activation due to an oversight during a change in personnel at city hall.

50 YEARS AGO

JUNE 30, 1966

Vandalism is beginning to plague the U.S. Forest Service in its forest areas. One party took the campground sign at the Trail’s End Campground. In another case a faucet was taken from a drinking fountain. Authorities are investigating.

The State Game and Fish department planted 50,000 yearling lake trout in Lake Superior, some at Grand Marais and the rest at Hovland.

Several new street signs have been put up in downtown Grand Marais to replace the old ones. They are more easily read and are sturdier.

Washington has announced approval of a $204,783 contract for reconstruction of a section of Stoney Brook Road between the Gunflint Trail and the old CCC road south of Greenwood Lake.

90 YEARS AGO

JULY 1, 1926

The Grand Marais baseball club has been re-united for another season. The officers were elected and candidates selected at a previous meeting. This club worked hard last year and with the help of the community managed to secure an outfit consisting of balls, bats and a few other necessary items.

Mrs. John Jacobson and family spent Wednesday in Grand Marais.

A.W. Miller, Standard Oil painter, has a crew painting the tanks at the Standard Oil Station, No. 56. R.B. Guirin, pump man for the Standard Oil Company, installed the new ethyl Red Crown gas pump at the service station here this week.

Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Peterson and three children of Strandberg, S.D., are here visiting the Lundquist family. Mrs. Peterson is Mr. Lundquist’s sister. They are delighted with the North$ Shore drive and think it no wonder that people are so fascinated that they want to live here.
