A mosaic created by fourth-grade students at Sawtooth Mountain Elementary School was finally completed and put up on the north wall of the Whole Foods Co-op building. The mosaic entitled “Summer” features the sun and a plaque with all of the students’ names.
By a vote of 44-12, Tofte has approved the purchase of 29-plus acres adjacent to Birch Grove for a town park. The referendum authorizes the township to issue tax-exempt bonds for up to $160,000; the expected levy increase in the first year is $18,749.

A 31-year-old Grand Marais man was arrested June 7 for possession and distribution of cocaine. When he was arrested, the man had 27 packages of cocaine powder in his possession. According to Police Chief Tom Billings, this was the single largest seizure of cocaine in Cook County.
By summer’s end, most of the intersections in Cook County will be marked with new signs bearing actual names of roads. County 68 will be Casper’s Hill, referring to one of the original county homesteaders in that area. The reason for the new signs and addresses is the Enhanced 911 program that began over a year ago.

Grand Marais, Hovland and Tofte telephone users are keeping the new Direct Distance Dialing (DDD) equipment humming, a Northwestern Bell Telephone manager said. “Customer response to this new long distance service improvement has been excellent,” said L.J. Kicker. “The bulk of the DDD calls are going through as smoothly as local calls.”
Three Canadian youths had a brush with the local law when they were apprehended by Sheriff Emerson Morris and Border Patrolman Willis Voxland early Friday morning. They were charged with disorderly conduct, theft and open bottle. The men admitted to stealing two cases of beer at the Iron Lake campground, and from there going to the Gunflint Lodge. There, they were not behaving and would not leave after being ordered to do so, and authorities were called. They were fined $275 after pleading guilty to the charges.

The Baduha is in the harbor this week. Clyde Kelly, the Duluth architect, is in command.
The local firemen are planning a real celebration in the village on the Fourth.
There will be band music, speeches, singing, sports of all kinds, and everything that goes with a real celebration.
