Due to overwhelming opposition, the Cook County commissioners Tuesday denied a request to rezone seven acres of Gunflint Trail property from resort commercial/residential to general commercial. The request made by Charlotte Ekroot-Nelson of Windigo Lodge was made in an effort to allow auto and snowmobile sales, service and repair at the site – activities which are not allowed under the current zoning.
Ben Butter and Maddy Cochrane were crowned prom king and queen at ceremonies in the high school gym before the prom Saturday night.

Cook County High School held its first-ever seniors prom Sunday, open to anyone 55 or over. It was a spin-off of the high school prom held the night before. The seniors made good use of the decorations put up for the high-schoolers.
Memorial Day travelers will find no immediate relief from the high prices they’ve been experiencing at the gas pumps. A recent AAA survey shows that the average price of unleaded self-serve gasoline is $1.289 per gallon, an increase of almost 7 cents since March. Compared to a year ago when unleaded self-serve gasoline was $1.21 per gallon, the price has increased almost 8 cents, and has not been this high since December 1990 during Operation Desert Storm.

Lester Shold and Ralph Jacobsen, employees of Pickens Gas Company, are in the hospital with burns suffered last Thursday afternoon when the truck they were driving became engulfed in flames. Something happened to loosen a gas tank which fell off the truck, catching fire. The men were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The unusual incident happened just east of the Rock Cut near Cut Face Creek.
Mr. and Mrs. Dale Chilsen and son are now living in the “house cabin” near the Fairway Store at Hovland. They have been quite busy as they are going to be in charge of the store which was opened for business last week.
Two thousand mallards from the McGraw- Ediston Foundation in Illinois have been received by local sportsmen for “planting” here. Anyone interested in taking some ducks this year might get in touch with Don Lobdell or the local game wardens.

Patrol Inspectors Wacholz, Huston and Wennerholm of the local immigration service made five apprehensions during the week just past. The men apprehended entered the States illegally, by evading the border officials at the bridge. Prior to their entry into the States they stole a Maxwell car in Fort William and participated in a store robbery. The Maxwell car was driven to the bridge and abandoned on the Canadian side.
