Fourth-grade students in Jana Larson and Deb Waage’s classes began putting mosaic tiles on the northeast wall of the Whole Foods Co-op this week, the third in the seasonal series which will eventually cover the wall. They hope to finish by the last day of school, June 9.

At its regular town meeting, Tofte supervisors voted unanimously to support a new lakeshore planned development, Surfside, on the site of the old Surfside resort. The vote came after an open house attended by about three dozen residents and a presentation to the board by developer Dennis Rysdahl.

MAY 20, 1996

A 15-year-old Cook County man was taken into custody on May 13 following an armed burglary in Schroeder. The incident was reported at 2:12 p.m. when a family using a relative’s cabin called police. When the youth was discovered in the cabin by family members, he was carrying a pellet gun and wearing camouflage clothing. His face had been blackened. The youth explained his presence in the cabin by saying he was a member of the U.S. Rangers and had a right to search for drugs. After a short encounter, the youth fled through the woods, and there was no resistance when he was taken into custody.

Grand Marais police chief Tom Billings has warned that counterfeit $50 bills have been turning up in town. To date, six of the bills have been turned in to police since the first of the year – two from Grand Marais and four from the casino. It is believed that the fake bills are coming from the Thunder Bay area.

MAY 19, 1966

The annual spring orders from the summer colony for water pump hook-ups at Hovland are in full swing and several have braved the snow and cold to come early.

Ed Blaski visited Maple Hill last week and after he returned to Duluth, he was in a car accident. Carl Hedstrom drove to visit him at the hospital.

Mrs. Nellie Smulan of Duluth and formerly of Cascade, returned last week from a train trip to Dallas.

In the 25 years that Frank Cherry has been at Devil’s Track Lake, he has always been able to get into his boat and go out for walleyes on the opening day of fishing. Not so this year! “We’ve still got 5- to 6-foot drifts and there was ice in the lake,” he said.

90 YEARS AGO
MAY 20, 1926

The fire this side of Cascade this week destroyed Creech’s camps, and the fish houses of Herman Helmerson, Olaf Olson, Peter Olson, Nels Wick, Hilmer Aabick, Peter Fredrickson and Chris Johnson. Also, about six miles of pole line of the local telephone company was burned down in the recent fire. Reconstruction will be started as soon as possible.

During the past week the following were arrested and fined for the alleged illegal taking and possession of beaver: Ardeen Gilbertson, Engel Tormondson, Thor Johnson. A number of traps and several beaver skins were seized, one being a rare specimen, a clear black fur.

Albert Makki was run over by a truck at Cascade Saturday and had one leg so badly broken that it was necessary to amputate it. The driver of the truck was arrested on two charges, one for being drunk while driving a car, for which he pleaded guilty and was fined $30. The other was a hit and run charge, for which he was bound over to the District Court, being released on $500 bail.
