There was an armed robbery in the casino portion of the Grand Portage Trading Post early Sunday, May 7. According to Sheriff Mark Falk, the unknown man robbed the store at gunpoint at 4:30 a.m. “The suspect fired two shots during the robbery and fled the scene on foot,” said Falk. “No one was injured and it is believed the suspect got into a vehicle that was in the general area of the Trading Post,” he said.

Gross misdemeanor charges have been filed against a Canadian man who attempted to transport a loaded handgun across the border April 20. Deputies responded to the Port of Entry and found a loaded handgun in the trunk of a vehicle belonging to the New Brunswick man. He admitted carrying the weapon to protect himself, however he allegedly did not have a permit to either carry or transport a loaded weapon as required by law.

MAY 13, 1996

The Cook County Planning Commission recommended denial of a conditional use permit to Gene Glader and Ulland Brothers Construction Company for operation of a bituminous hot mix asphalt plant on the Glader property at the junction of Highway 61 and County Road 7 west of Grand Marais. The action followed two hours of information and debate about the hazards and harmful effects of a hot mix operation in a residential zone.

After a winter that broke most of the records, Grand Portage National Monument will open its gates for the ’96 season on May 25. Normally welcoming visitors by mid-May, the monument’s opening was slightly delayed to allow more time for the record snow depth to melt and the ground to dry out.

MAY 12, 1966

A car accident on Highway 61 near Baptism River on Sunday took the life of a Duluth man, 51, whose body was found in the wreckage by his brother Monday morning.

The owners of Sawbill Lodge returned from Chicago last week and were confronted with snowbanks, which kept them from their usual spring cleaning.

Their first visit in Las Vegas was “just wonderful,” say the Richard Andersons, who returned Saturday. They met with 2,000 bankers for the annual convention of Independent Brokers Association of America. They also saw Hoover Dam, old mining towns that are now tourist attractions, and other places in Nevada.

MAY 13, 1926

William A. Pittenger, candidate for the Republican nomination for Congress, was a caller at this office yesterday. With him were Elof Anderson and William Berg of Duluth. Mr. Pittenger is looking after his political fences.

Adolph Backlund shot a wolf before breakfast this morning.

Two small fires were located Sunday, one in Canada and one near Cramer. They were extinguished.

Oscar Olson has a new Speed wagon.

Emil Hall fished in Spruce Creek Sunday and caught four trout.

The alibi of an accused bandit is that at the time of an alleged hold-up he was in a drug store buying a bandage for his nose, that had been injured in a fight. That isn’t such a poor alibi. A fellow has to be pretty close, as a rule, to where his nose is.
