A small but talented group of Cook County High School track and field athletes joined with their Silver Bay teammates to participate in the first big track meet of the year, the 14-team Barnum Invitational. With training interrupted by spring break and delayed by the recently melted snow, the Vikings knew they were a little behind the teams from the south. But that didn’t stop them from scoring points in a number of events.
The Upper North Shore Fitness Center for Athletics received a check for $4,547 from the Young Athletes Foundation recently. The money will be used to purchase three strength-training machines for the center, rounding out its complement of equipment.

Different segments of the Colvill community have inquired about the possibility of establishing a volunteer fire department in the unorganized territory where they live. County officials have taken action by scheduling a meeting at the town hall on May 15 to provide information on how a fire department operates, and to offer advice, support and answers to questions. At least 12 active people would be needed to start with.
At a special single-issue board meeting April 30, the Cook County commissioners voted 4-1 in favor of asking the Grand Marais City Council to add block 6 of the Business Development Area as an optional site for building the new jail/law enforcement center. County board chair Wes Hedstrom said that if both the city council and the Economic Development Authority (which has control of the BDA land) agree with the county, preparation for building could start in about three weeks.

Mrs. Carl Sjoberg had the exciting experience of meeting and talking to a TV celebrity while in Minneapolis last week. She met none other than Ken Curtis – Festus of “Gunsmoke” fame! Curtis was appearing at J.C. Penney stores promoting the sale of his latest recordings.
The clown act which won first place in the recent 4-H competition was enjoyed by the people at the local nursing home Saturday afternoon. It was repeated several times so that all could see and enjoy it.
Mrs. Per Borton, wife of the prime minister of Norway, and her uncle were at the Edgewater Inn, Tofte, for a noon dinner Tuesday.

Notice: Motorists have not been living up to the traffic rules through the winter months as strictly as they should have. From now on it will be necessary to enforce the village and state laws and persons guilty of violations of same will be dealt with according to the full extent of the law. The Gunflint Trail is now open and is reported to be in good condition.
Karl M. Johnson of Split Rock was in town last week. He is building himself a new house there, but will continue to spend his summers in Grand Marais.
Gasoline boat Island Queen, owned by Sam Johnson and Sons Fisheries, now makes regular trips to and from Isle Royale from Grand Marais. Steve Johnson is the captain and Chas. Purdy is engineer. Mr. Purdy expects to live in Grand Marais and will move his family here soon.
Cornelius Hall managed to arrive in Grand Marais this morning with his veteran Ford car which has seen better days since its departure from the factory in 1913.
