At the first town meeting after the Lutsen annual meeting, new clerk Cathryn Hanson asked supervisors to make some housekeeping decisions including pay rates for supervisors, fire chief, clerk and treasurer. In a 2-1 vote, supervisors approved a raise for their pre-meeting attendance compensation from $75 to $85. Supervisor Brad Ludlow, who was elected as chair to replace Bob Tyson, said that in his nine years on the board there has been no increase in compensation. “It’s just an issue of everything else going up,” he said. Newly elected supervisor Diane Parker voted against the motion, citing the need for trust and accountability to voters.
The state Department of Transportation will spend $450,000 to seal roadway cracks on Highway 61 between Grand Marais and the Pigeon River. The project is necessary due to extreme “tenting” or frost heaving on the road, making travel at normal highway speeds impossible.

Chris Holte has passed on to that everlasting realm. Last Thursday he went out on the lake to look after his nets, and was to have returned by noon. His boat could not be seen at that hour on account of the action of the waves, but by 3 o’clock it was clear and calm, and the boat could be plainly seen, but it appeared to be empty. It was two miles west of Grand Marais. Two men rowed to the scene and found Mr. Holte lying in the bottom of the boat in about a foot of water. He had been stricken with paralysis and was breathing irregularly. He was brought to shore, where efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he died at 9:35 p.m.
