County personnel director Janet Simonen said she has been researching EDA meeting minutes and bylaws with Grand Marais City Administrator Mike Roth in an effort to figure out when members’ terms expire. Because the files are in such disarray, Simonen said, adjustments may have to be made to some terms, and better records will be kept in the future. Both the city and county appoint members to serve on the board.

Although it cost more than originally thought, completion of a Moose Valley boundary survey was described Tuesday as “an exercise in good government” by the surveyor in charge of the work. The subject came under discussion when Auditor- Treasurer Braidy Powers asked the county commissioners to approve payment of an additional $15,202 to help pay the administrative cost of the project. Powers noted the costs have gone “significantly beyond” the original estimates.

Two Grand Marais men were caught fishing for lake trout out of season in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area on April 10. The men were fishing both Ram and Little Trout lakes and had a total of 12 lines out when a conservation officer confronted them. They were also fishing with live minnows, a bait not allowed due to the danger of harming the fish habitat.

The emergency deer feeding programs that distributed more than 5,000 tons of specially formulated deer feed across the northern half of Minnesota are nearing their end as winter weather moderates and available funds are depleted. In the Grand Marais area, where feeding began March 9, some of the feeding stations have already been shut down. It is estimated that a total of about 3,800 tons of feed will be purchased and distributed in this part of the state. A special $750,000 legislative appropriation from the state Game and Fish Fund was used to pay for the program.
