If present population trends continue, ISD 166 could be deeply in the red by the year 2009, School Superintendent Chuck Futterer told the school board at its regular meeting on Monday. Tentative revenue and expenditure projections for fiscal years ’06 and ’09, for example, show that the projected budget deficit of $393,000 for FY 2006 would grow to $1.14 million by FY 2009. Decreasing enrollment and static or decreasing state aid are the culprits, Futterer said.

A Wisconsin aircraft pilot landed his Cessna 172 at the closed Tofte airport Thursday afternoon and suddenly found his propeller plowing snow. Misinformed or underinformed, the pilot took off from Madison to join his family at Lutsen for a skiing vacation. The pilot said his January 1996 map showed the Tofte airport as being open, and his flight instructor told him by radio that it was open and operational. The plane progressed approximately 25 yards on 18-24 inches of snow before its landing gear broke through the snow. Then it stood on its nose and plowed a path about 30 feet long before it flipped over and turned its wheels to the sky. The Tofte airport has been closed since 1993. The plane was a total loss.
